  2. They all have different limitations and advantages at this point. It's a matter of trade-offs. In my opinion, the Panasonics are the best overall. The Pioneers have a HD and tivo, but you cannot edit on the HD before burning (like taking out commercials). I have the Panny e20, 2 years old, no HD but you can edit on the ram disk. The best bet at this time is the Panny e100. Has a HD and firewire in, in case you have a digital camcorder. Can edit on the HD then transfer to dvd-r or ram. I love using ram. I have recorded off digital cable and satellite, and transfered tapes. I record to ram, put in my computer, transfer the .vro file (everything on the ram disk is in one large file), change extension to .mpg, bring file into Ulead DVD Workshop, and author. I have even brought the file into Ulead Media Studio Pro, edited with fancy transitions, added backround music, etc, exported as an .mpg, then authored on Workshop. I kept the original ac3 audio thru all of this, and never re-encoded the video. Great set-up. For a quick and dirty authoring solution, you can us Tmpeg DVD Author. Its simple, retains ac3, and accepts .vro.

They have HD model without TiVo which will let you edit (if I remember correctly).

    Pioneer DVR810-HS : 120GB : TiVo
    Pioneer DVR510-HS : 80GB

Based on manual, Pioneer is using DVD-R and DVD-RW. Not RAM.
