Herrie has released the latest version of his firmware and it can change the booktype setting for +R and +RW burning. Just follow this link for more info. http://herrie.rpc1.org/downloads/nec108v2.txt. There is a restriction. You must have v1.06 to 1.08.

Still this will be a great feature and if I'm not mistaken this makes the NEC the only combo drive to have booksetting feature, correct?

Yes, you can flash from 1.09 to 108v2.
The advantage -at least for me - is that one of my DVD-Players only accepts DVD-R and no RW discs at all. So, recording some shows, burning them and watching only works with a DVD-R and then I can throw it in the garbage. With this feature I can record to +RW, set it to DVD-ROM and like magic the player reads and plays the disc. Afterwords, I can just erase and re-write it again. If you have a picky player and you consider a DVD burner - the NEC1300 is the way to go. But only because Herrie, BronkowTech45 (especially him!!!) and nicw made it possible.
Thanks - and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Please do a donation if you use this firmware.

Anyway I started using 108v2 last night and it works like a charm. I was able to play a +RW on my older Toshiba DVD player with the booktype DVD-ROM.
My in-laws bought me 50 +Rs for Christmas that wouldn't play on my Toshiba. Now they will
This is brilliant! -
"CAN the booktype setting in Nero destroy my drive when i use this option in Nero more than a 100 or 1000 times or is flashing the firmware more than 100/1000 times only a issue?
Answer: with this firmware NERO does not offer book type settings. Book type settings do not write to the drives flash memory and therefore not reduce lifespan."
I did read it. The English isn't the greatest in the readme so I just want to confirm that it's not just talking about NERO. -
Yeah, it sounds a bit confusing.
Just set the defaults to ROM (said it worked for you) and thats all. -
hey i've got the nec 1300a but our 6 year old standalone won't play the dvd-r's i burn (RITEKG04) and on my ps2 i can play them. i got no clue wut the booktype setting is but is there any way i can benefit with it? like play dvd's on our standalone?

Great news!!!!
Flashed my NEC-1300a last night only took 1 minute + reboot. I tried 1 test using dvdinfo pro to set the book type and formatted a Memorex DVD+RW (2.4x) to book type DVD-Rom. I then used Nero to burn a DVD backup that I had previously stored on my HD. I then crossed my fingers and tried the disc in my Apex AD600a and the movie played fine. My previous firmware version was 1.05 and every test I tried using DVD+RW worked on my Apex AD700 player but not the AD-600a. Finally a patch that truly works!!!
I can set the book type on my NEC-1300a and it works!!!!! -
