  1. I have question:
Is there any way to burn AVI or MPG files using DVD-R disks, so they can be playable on TV DVD Players.

Lets say I have 6 AVI movies and I want to burn them on DVD-R disk and watch them trought DVD TV player. What should I do in order to do that.

I already try to burn some of my movies on DVD-R disks but my TV DVD player didn't recognize the disk. So I figured that I probably need to convert my AVI files into something else and then try to burn them into DVD-R disk. Is that right?

How many AVI movies can I fit into one DVD-R disk after conversion asuming that each AVI movie is 700MB?

    Any help is appreciated!

First, you need to Convert the AVI to MPEG DVD format. Then have an authoring program make the DVD files. Then burn the DVD files onto a DVD-R. What programs came with your DVD burner?
    Hello.

  3. Thanks for the reply!
So this MPEG DVD format is the same as MPEG-2 or not?

What program would you recomend to do the conversion?

What authoring program would you recomend to make the DVD files?

And finaly what program would you recomend to burn my DVD Disk.

The thing is I've got bunch of these programs all I need to know which one is better and user friendly.

Also what is the length (in min) of a usual DVD Disk (I know it can hold 4.7 GB)?

What DVD+-R/W is better for this task? I have multi DVD Burner it can burn anything?

It is more like saying MPEGs are cars, MPEG-2 are Hondas, and MPEG DVD is a Honda Civic.

The easiest in my opinion, is Ulead's Video Studio 7 (VS7).

    VS7.

    VS7.

I would normally suggest TMPGEnc Plus, as it is the most agile, in my opinion. But we need to get your "teeth cut" on burning DVDs, and VS7 is an all-in-one tool. We can teach you the "acrobatics" later.

Also, I would suggest you use DVD±RWs at first, as beginners tend to make a few mistakes first time "out of the block", and DVD±RWs are reusable.
Also what is the length (in min) of a usual DVD Disk (I know it can hold 4.7 GB)?
Tough question, as it is like asking how many college students can fit inside of a volkswagen (showing my age).

But the short answer is up to six hours, depending on what video quality you are willing to live with, as the more you put on your disk by lowering the bit rate, the more the quality will suffer.
What DVD+-R/W is better for this task? I have multi DVD Burner it can burn anything?
This depends on your DVD player. Go to the DVD players database at left and look up your player. If it is listed, it will show you what DVD format your player handle, and which ones it may have problems with.

Here are the compatibility specs for each DVD format:
    DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 92% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 75% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
    DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

    DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some "better" features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 86% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 75% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
    DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

  5. Tommy... nice post. You were very helpful to the newbie. Any one else that will search for help. On behalf of other newbies.. thanks for taking the time. I myself am only a few months into this dvd burning stuff and every day learn more. This site is a great tool.

I also like Ulead. I have Movie Factory 2. Its pretty simple and will take the mpeg or avi files to create the dvd folders and burn. I just got Tmpgenc dvd author. That seems to be a great tool to author the mpeg and vob files.

Thank you very much. I really like helping people I guess, and I still remember when I was a newbie not too long ago. I agree this site is a great tool, which is why the members tend to bristle when someone comes in here hot off Kazaa asking for help in doing illegal activities. We do not want to lose this site.

I am sure you realize as well this site also has a culture, inspsred by Tgpo, as he is a moderator, but also very funny. So if you see one of us take a playful poke at him, do not worry, he is quite thick-skinned, and even instigates it sometimes.

I hope you enjoy your time here, and let me know if we can help you with anything as well.

This is one case where size does matter.

If you already have the DVD authored with files like IFOs, BUPS, etc., load them into DVD Shrink. It will compress them to fit on one DVD disk.
