  1. I am capturing VHS movies on Scenalyzer Live at a resolution of 720x480 in DV format. i checked this in mediaplayer and it says 720x480.
When I import the movie into TMPGEnc, it will auto detect it as "4:3 525 line (NTSC, 704x480)".

I noticed that there are two choices in TMPGEnc for me to choose from: "4:3 525 line (NTSC, 704x480)", and ""4:3 525 line (NTSC)". Should I stay with the auto detected resolution (is this normal?) or should I switch it to the other setting?

    Thanks for the help.

  2. Even DVD rips that I've put into TMPGEnc report a 704x480 resolution. They always turn out fine. It might just be a typo in the program.

It only really matters in the encoding process anyway. If you choose "Full Frame", it'll make it that, whatever aspect you specify, if it's 4x3 then that's what it'll make it. I'm sure you'd want to crop out the bad edges from your VHS while encoding anyway.

  3. Thanks mijman for the reply. The movies seemed to turn out ok, but I didn't know if I was trimming some lines from the movie by using this setting.

Does anybody know the difference between the two NTSC source settings in TMPGEnc?

Not sure about the difference between the too. I have notices that but from tests it is better to stick to the format the software proposes as default.

If your input file is 720x480 then you should choose the option that says "4:3 525 line (NTSC)" and not the "default" setting of 704x480

The 704x480 setting resizes the 720x480 to 704x480 by squishing the video (though the effect is very slight) and then adds 8 pixels of black on either side.

  9. If your video is 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9 use the 4:3 setting rather than broadcast specific sizes as these sometimes alter the picture geometry slightly.

  10. DaveQB,

You might be running into the problem of TMP needing DV2 format not DV1. Look in tools for the DV1 to DV2 converter. It's a canopus file coverter. Then it should import no problem. You can also use gspot to open your DV file and it should tell you it's like Mpeg1 DV1 format.

  11. , I thought this question was dead already. I am glad I looked at it again.

Thanks a lot FulciLives, Since you mentioned it, I do see the little black lines on either side now when viewing on the PC. The television cuts the edges off so I cannot see them on the TV.

    You too compaqsport, much appreciated!
