Are you sure it is installed correctly (jumpers, etc.)?
    Hello.

  3. I took out the existing cd burner and conected the power (multicolored cord) and the grey cord ...those were the only two I had to use. I've installed one in my hp and it works just fine.

And you have adjusted the jumpers in the back of the DVD burner, right?
    Hello.

  5. Filling out your computer profile would help us alot.

It appears you either have a bad drive, a bad ribbon cable, wrong drive jumper setting (master-slave-single-cable select) or improperly setup BIOS, or improperly seated cables/plugs.

Is this the only CD/DVD drive you have in your system? Will the tray open and does the drive light come on? Does the BIOS see this new drive? Did you check the jumper settings on your old removed drive and setup this new drive the same?

    We need input.....

    Good luck

  6. Okay, all that is foreign language to me...thanks for replying to the both of you. So your saying I should pull out the drive and check to see if the master/ slave is okay. the drive itself opens and shuts, the light comes on and everything however, there is a cd-rom above the dvd-burner drive. I'll complete the profile too, I not sure on how to change the bios.

    WARNING !!!!!!!

A Dell with XP (Pro) MAY require you to have both drives set at CS - Cable Select like mine does. I have XP Pro in a Dell computer. My LG DVDBurner AND my Samsung Combo drive are both set to CS on the jumpers.
The also both work with the burner set at MASTER and the Samsung set at SLAVE....however they are both much better and more reliable at CS.
Both drives that were originally in the computer were also set at Cable Select FROM THE FACTORY.
If you replaced a drive with the new burner....check it's jumper settings.

  9. If you're fairly flexible and have good eye sight and a flashlight you can probably check the jumper setting without removing the drive. A pair of tweasers are also handy for changing those little jumper. Just don't drop it down in the case. Their hard to find sometimes.

    Good luck.

My Dell opens up like a pair of scissors(for lack of a better description). AWESOME design. VERY easy to change almost anything in this computer.
