Hello a friend..well not a friend sum idiot guy who i dont even like was trying 2 tell me that he has 3 megbit adsl..and its faster than my cable interenet (im front australia and i have optus cable) ..and i just wanna know isnt 3 megbit 3000 kilobits...and thats 300/8 to change to bytes so isnt that 375kilobytes per second download speed at the maximum?... coz i can download faster like 3 times faster than that on my cable internet. So i just wondering if i have it rite.... or yeah... how to wok out or estimate how fast 3mgbit adsl would download at. and if my cable net is faster optus says it uncapped but it would b capped by the network cards speed??

so please tell me ur answers i would like to know the real answer as i know a little bit but not heaps. it is prolly (probably) a stupid question and i have it totaly wrong.

  2. VDSL operates over the copper wires in your phone line in much the same way that ADSL does, but there are a couple of distinctions. VDSL can achieve incredible speeds, as high as 52 Mbps downstream (to your home) and 16 Mbps upstream (from your home). That is much faster than ADSL, which provides up to 8 Mbps downstream and 800 Kbps (kilobits per second) upstream. But VDSL's amazing performance comes at a price: It can only operate over the copper line for a short distance, about 4,000 feet (1,200 m).

  3. VDSL is not available for home users in Australia currently and won't be for at least half a decade or more.

The fastest broadband connection you are going to get in Australia as a home user at a reasonable price is the connection you already have, Optus cable. It is faster than both the ADSL that most ISP's (including Telstra) offer and also Telstra cable itself.

I will hazard a guess and say you are on the 3GB plan, correct? If so, wait till March in 2004 when Optus is announcing all new plans that are supposedly cheaper and have larger download limits. Also in January and February they are upgrading all users (for free) to the next plan up i.e. the 3GB plan goes to 6GB, 6GB to 15GB and so forth.

Currently the broadband pricing/limits situation in Australia is dismal in comparison to other western countries like the United States due in large to Telstra. It looks like the situation will be getting better however in 2004.

Yeah i am on the 3 gig arnt most ppl. HOw do u find out about the extra plans i new there was new plans but wasnt to sure what was happening. I know about the 6 gig as i have already used 5.9gig and i still have 6 days i have to survive on 90mg for 6 days so i can keep the faster speed.

Thanks for answering the question you answerd exacly how i wanted. Also what is the average download speed of optus cable and how about cable in USA or other types.??

  5. Optus cable has a 1.5 megabits download speed and a 128kbps upload speed. Whether you get those speeds is another matter entirely and dependant on the site/server you are downloading from.

The new plans haven't been publicly annouced in terms of specifics however they are expected to be cheaper and have a greater download limit then the plans currently in place.

As for the cable speeds in the USA most are pretty similar to the Optus cable specs however their plans are generally cheaper and they have a greater download limit.
