    Ok,

I've finally managed to get 640x480 captures - and it all
started with Virtualdub (VD). Some time after that, I can
now cap 640x480 in Studio as well.
My prev. caps were the crop 608x464. As to quality, it's
only slightly better. But, I'll take it! And, my final
encodes to SVCD are even better on TV !!

Ok, what I wanted ta know was this...
can I use the filters in VD while capturing?
I mean, say I use the DeInterlace filter in VD while I am
caping a show, will it work or not? For test purposes,
I turned just this filter on to see if it would work, but
it didn't!! I still saw the lines. Did I miss something?
I hear from time to time, about poeple stating you can use
filters while capturing, but I don't know the proper steps
to get these filters to work in concert. I'm hoping to
cut some time away from my encoding projects. If I can
have the filters do all the work while capturing, my
encoding time could be cut, maybe 20% or more!

Please, if anyone has the answer, I'd sure appreciate it!

    Thank you in advance!!
    when I play

You need to not only add the filter during the capture mode, but also video/enable RGB filters.

Generally this WILL NOT work. If you have a 1.5ghz+ PC it might work, but basicly the conversions involved are slower than realtime and therfore impossible to do while capturing.

The only filters that work on captures seem to be the built in bicubic resize and noise reduction.

    Snowmoon,

Ok, thanks. I should have mentioned my captured card.
DC10+ (that's the hardware mjpeg). when I view my cpu %,
    it's between 4% and 17%, sometimes 0% if i just leave
    my mouse alone.

If cpu overload is an issue (as it may be), I'd be willing
to figure out which filter(s) use use with the least overload.
...even if it would mean using only one filter. Just so long
as I can cut (shave) some time off.

Than again, maybe my card doesn't allow RGB stuff??
I don't know. And, I can't go to my other pc cause it's
busy with an ST-Enterprise encode project. So, it'll be
running through the rest of the night. By morning, it should
be complete! And, I could have a look at Virtualdub,
pending any additional response to this post.

Thank you for your past response!

Ok, here's how it would work then...

You card sends MJPEG to vdub, vdub would have to de-compress the MJPEG and then feed it the filters, then re-compress it into another format ( MJPEG, Huffyuv ) before saving it to disk. Unless you have a very powerful system it won't work. VDub was not set up for real-time filtering.

Now rumors are the next version of vdub will streamline all of this stuff with YUV modes and filters that can work both for capture and post processing on some PC's. There is no timeline on when that will be out.

  6. Vhelp/Snowmoon - I have StudioDC10+ and can only capture at 608x464. What steps did you use to capture at 640x480? Also I use the Studio 10 software to edit my video. What codex do you use to output an AVI file (if you do)? I use the Intel Indeo R32. This worked at first but now I can't get TMPEG(j) to encode. I always stops at 99% and has an error message saying it can't process the audio.

    bertmartin,

I've ben caping at 608x464 since I got the card, way back when
maybe 3 months ago - I don't remember. Anyway, over this
weekend, I did some experimentation with my S-VHS and
S-Video cards. In short, I fiddled with my BIOS and if you
can find a post I made a month or so ago, about how I got
smartripper to rip at 5x or more speed (from 1x) I believe
that maybe, this was the cause, in combination with my weird
system system (AMD) and also Virtualdub. Anyways, I most
have awoken something up in one of my setups because once
I tested the S-Video out, everything started to work, for the first
time - 640x480. So, I went back to Studio to give it a try, and
it worked! Right now, I use both - VD and Studio. It just
    depends.

Anyways, you may have to fiddle with your BIOS settings to
your CD-ROM or CD R/W drives and/or HD's. Mine was with
the CD R/W drive and my DVD Drive.

My next step to work on (cause it's not complete) is to re-swap
the order of my CD RW and DVD drives. DVD is dma on and
CD RW is dma off (can't seem to tun it on anymore cause of
the swap). But BOTH used to be on before the swap. So I'm
going to give it a try later on today. I have to go on a trip
today (I'm running late right now, but just about ready to walk
out the door). Thought I'd just answer your post!

I don't know what kind of setup you have, but you may have
to do the same thing as I. I think it's all about band width.
ANYthing can steal your cpu % and rob your elsewhere, hence
    my video capture.

I'll talk on the S-VIDEO thing in another post, as I'm pressed
for time and was menting to post an S-VIDEO success story or
    something along that line.

Oh, I DO NOT USE version 2.0, but I do you version 12 (no letters) .

    Later!
