  1. I just got a nice NTSC VHS tape which i want to capture with my Pinnacle Studio Deluxe card (using Studio 8 as software).

My VCR is PAL, but it can play NTSC tapes, only it converts the signal to PAL60, which makes it perfectly playable with colours. But, when i try to record this with Pinnacle (PAL or NTSC) it's black and white.

Anyone knows how to solve this? Perhaps some hacked Pinnacle drivers? I already found some other drivers that supposed to work with VirtualDub, but as far as i know these are BTxxx drivers designed for TV tuner cards like the PCTV Pro.

  3. Does your VCR plays NTSC as NTSC by any chance ?

First of all, you need to install the latest tweeked WDM Capture drivers & WDM Capture utility
Then, you have to install the latest dscaler and the latest virtualvcr

Now: You open dscaler and set PAL 60 as source. You exit dscaler. You load virtualvcr and you change the device settings to PAL60 (if you don't run first dscaler, this option ain't always there for virtualvcr...).
You set manualy framerate to 29.97 and you resample audio. You also set capture size at 704 x 480 (NOT 704/720 x 576)
    You grabb...

You filter and you encode using TMPGenc, as NTSC not PAL.

Problem: Sometimes the audio is out of synch. Solutions:
    1. Grab 10 min segments (not more!). IMHO the best solution. The audio delay is there, but it is not enough to be noticable.
    2. Set the framerate to 30.00 Fps. Unfortunatelly, you have to convert this to 29.97 or 23.97 using various technics, mostly for NTSC. Then, you do a framerate convertion using virtualdub (or avisynth). The audio/video is OK but there gonna be some fields here or there "jumping" in the picture. This sometimes can be really anoying but most of the time is simply unoticable.

Unfortunatelly, you can't capture PAL 60 with virtualdub using wdm drivers and vfm wrappers. You can't set the input to PAL 60: When you install WDM drivers, the program ask you what system you use. What you set there, is what sticks with virtualdub.
If you use win98se and vfm drivers you may be able to grabb PAL60 with virtualdub. I did it once some time ago, but it was really difficult.

I have an Aopen TI4200VIVO with philips 7108 chip and Samsung VCR with NTSC playback. I tried the latest Nvidia video en WDM drivers. I have installed the WDM drivers with the videostandard set to AUTO and PAL_433_60 in the nvcap.inf file. No luck still capturing in B/W. Dscaler is not supporting VIVO cards. I have found a capture program FlyCapDS on http://www.asvzzz.com/flycap.htm witch can capture NTSC443 and PAL60 but that doesn't seem to work either. I also tried with my BT848 capture card and the latest BtwinCap 5.3.7 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/btwincap/). Here I tried Dscaler set to pal60 and then with virtualVCR but I don't get PAL60 profile in the list of Virtual VCR! If I select NTSC profile, I get B/W, with PAL I have a stable colour screen but it is split in two, the upper lines are shown at the bottom of the screen. I don't know how to force the BT card to accept PAL60. Any more suggestions?

I don't have problem on capturing PAL 60 using Hauppauge win TV primio FM and Kworld Mpeg 2 Station, with the latest BtwinCap 5.3.7 and the method above. I also set the framesize at 704 x 480 and the framerate at 29.97 to succeed capturing without any frame drop. On some videos, this must be set to 30.00, so if you drop lots of frames, set it to 30.00 and it might stop.

You don't use RF right? (tuner) Only with S-VIdeo / Composite-In connection, this option is avalaible.

If you have a colour picture with dscaler on PAL60, then it is possible to capture for sure. You just need to find how to set up your card right. To force some capturing applications work with PAL 60.

I also remember unlead movie factory 1 succeed PAL60 captures with my asus 7700 card, which is an nvidia card. There, I had to use the old good WDM 1.08 drivers (the only ones work with that card....)

Finally, there is always the possibility your card simply can't except anything else than what you bought it for...

Isn't silly? A cheap 50 Euro card can do things an expencive 300 euro can't.

Yeah, maby it's the card....I have a Pinnacle PCTV Rave and I use Composite IN. I can't get a decent picture in Dscaler with pal60....When I install Dscaler, I have to manualy input my pinnacle card (it does not autodetect), in the Sources menu I have then pinnacle and conexant Bt. When I chose pinnacle, I can select PAL60 in the BT card Format menu (preview is not 100% stable). when I chose Conexant in the source menu, I don't have pal60. In virtualVCR I can only chose Conexant in the video device selection and in the Video Capture Filter Device setting there is no pal60...so I give up. I will do another test with the wdm 1.08 drivers and my other card if I can find the drivers (do I have to manualy set Videostandard to PAL_433_60 in those drivers?)
anyway, Thans for the help, I let you know if I found something that works
