i've been into the setup screen and enabled VCD / HDCD / WMA etc and made player region 0. It will not play DVD-R discs, is there anything else i can do to enable it to play DVD-R discs? Has anyone used DVD-R or DVD+R discs with this player? I have used the same discs on many machines so no problem with discs.

I have used DVD-R Media burnt using Pioneer writer. The Media was Unbranded Dark Purple Die - All have worked fine. However I have had no luck with playback from dvd-r burnt on panasonic dvd recorders. I have had confirmation from Wharfedale that the player supports DVD-R (but finding media that is compatible is a big issue)
