In the next week or two im going to be buying a nec drive and have been reading that the firmware should be updated for better use with cheaper media. I was wondering what firmware I should use? Should I use the nec or is the herriers hacked firmware better. Sorry for any spelling errors. Thanks

  2. If you buy a new NEC then the firmware it comes with will probably be good enough. I bought mine earlier this year and it had firmware 1.05 which never gave me any problems with cheap media. I then recently upgraded to the non-hacked 1.08 version just becuase it was out there.

I basically did the same thing. Used mine for a while with what it came with (which I think was actually 1.04) then updated about a month or so ago to the non-hacked 1.08 and all is well.

I really see no difference between the two though. But you should probably update to the 1.08 version just to be safe as it has some tweaks to it and appears to be error free.

NEC has just released official firmware 1.09 for the NEC 1300A.

It seems like they did their homework pretty well, since they added support for many media. Unfortunately there are still some quite common media missing.

The firmware is available as 'Normal', 'Auto Reset' and 'Free' version in the Download section.

My NEC ND-1300A came with firmware 1.04 which I used for a while with no problems. Then I flashed to the official 1.08 firmware which again worked without problems. Just last night I flashed to the official 1.09 firmware and so far I've burned 2 SONY DVD-R discs with no problems.

I ran both through DVDInfoPro and got ZERO READ ERRORS on both. One was 4.02GB and the other was 4.25GB

This is the first time I've ever used SONY DVD-R media. I just bought them last night at STABLES as they are on sale there this week. The price is $15.00 for a 10-pack (they come in full sized CD style jewel cases).

I've been mostly sticking to the FUJI 10-packs (that also come in full sized CD style jewel cases) because they are Taiyo-Yuden discs but those cost $25.00 per 10-pack and I couldn't resist the price on the SONY DVD-R discs. So far I am happy with them except they only burn at 2x but at that price ... well it doesn't bother me.

The sale started this past Sunday (12-21-2003) so it should be in effect through the end of this Saturday (12-28-2003). I plan on going back this Friday to buy some more. I only bought one 10-pack to test but so far I am satisfied with them.

What difference ... if any ... my upgrade to firmware 1.09 made with these I don't know but I think the 1.09 version supports SONY whereas the older versions don't.

BTW the MEDIA CODE on these simply say SONY and nothing else. They do say MADE IN TAIWAN which tends to make me shudder when it comes to DVD-R discs (again I try to stick to the MADE IN JAPAN stuff like MAXELL or TDK or the FUJI Taiyo-Yuden discs) but if I can burn these SONY discs up to 4.25GB (which is the most I normally do on DVD2ONE back-ups using 4350MB as a custom size) with ZERO READ ERRORS then they MUST be good discs.

I've seen too many other so-called "quality" brands of DVD-R discs begin to get read errors around the 4.2GB mark. The certified 1x-4x BeAll discs from MERITLINE.COM being a good example of that.
