  1. When converting from an AVI clip for burning a VCD i have options for mpg (vcd file) and mpeg1,

what are the differences bet these two formats?
Could i use any one of them for burning a vcd which can be played back in a set-top DVD player? Should I get the same result when playing back?

    Thank you!!

You should always post what program you are using. Anyway, VCD does use MPEG-1. These are the specs.
    Hello.

Use the MPG (VCD file option.) Although a VCD compliant MPG file is an MPG (and MPEG-1) file, the VCD specification requires a specific video bitrate (1150kbps) and resolution 352 x 240/288 (NTSC/PAL.) The MPEG-1 setting may not use these. Check your documentation for which settings the MPEG-1 settings uses, or give us more information, like the name of the program/hardware.
