  1. Hi all,

I have a Sony TRV70 minidv which I use to shoot my videos. The cam can shoot in a Progressive Scan Mode and in a Normal Mode.

My question is, since I chose the Progressive Scan Mode (non-interlaced) to shoot my videos; should I capture in non-interlaced mode?

With an analog capture card or DV ?

I think you should capture Progressive if you can. It encodes
better. It can always be played interlaced

Your capture card will know how to handle source to capture, be it
    Interlace or Progressive.

    Some examples:

    * Film or Made for TV are Telecined (aka, 3:2 pattern)

    * Progressive is usually fullframe. So, capturing will be 720x480 fullframe
    ...progressive (not interlace)

    * Pure Interlace (or DV footage) will usually be Interlaced (ie, TRV-22)
...720 x 240 Fields (when you capture at 29.970 fps, your capture card an
...driver will handle this type of source and weave them together as an
    ...Interlace 720 x 480 frame

    * Pure Progressive (or DV footage) (your cam, when setup for PSM) will be
    ...Progressive (ie, your TRV-70)
...** Either it will output as 720 x 240 Fields, but (be progressive(1) or
...** Telecined) will output as either fullframe 720 x 480, or Telecined w/
...** the 3:2 pattern for an IVTC to turn back into Progressive.
...** (I'm not sure exactly how these cams work, so experiment)

    (1) - by this, I mean that you will have the option of IVTC'ing your source.
This will turn it into Progressive frames.

I seriously doubt any camcorders Telecine their video for the
    simple reason that they can't

    hi FOO,

Home-dubget ones.. yes.., you may be right. But on those that are a couple
    of grand can

Long story short, I read in one of my DV Magizine's about a cam
or two, that do. And, they went into the dicussion about built-in Telecine
processes of these units. I think those cams were for $2000 dollars.
    .
    .
There were different methods of Telecining the footage on the fly.
    I can't remember the month I have, but I'll give a search. I kno it's gotta
be laying around somewhere's. I got it from work

That's crazy. Why would they ? All they have to do is
simply capture at 30fps to start with. Beats me

...and you know they would have to store some fields so they can write them
on tape twice or have some kind of flag mechanism like mpeg2.

    @ FOO..

    Ah.., I found it !!

It's in the Dec 2003 issue. On page 76. I remember mentioning this same
article to someone else a while back (maybe a month ago) I think.

Article is: Shooting and Editing 24p
Sub: When and how to shoot 24p, and how to deal with it in post[/b]..

    * 24 versus 23.98

    * 24p DV post

Lots of info in that article.

If you can figure out how to get to it (via on-line) that would be great
