  1. I record TV programmes on DVD-RAM using an E50. I wanted to put some of them on DVD -R, so bought a LG 4040B writer. The drive seems to work fine. It reads everything. It burns DVD -Rs. It treats DVD-RAMs like a hard drive. I can read a DVD-RAM from the E50 in Explorer and it finds the IFO BUP and VRO files. I can copy the IFO and BUP files to my hard drive but as soon as I touch a VRO file Explorer crashes. I have also tried to access the files from TMPGEnc DVD Author. This crashes as well.

Anyone any idea what is happening? Is it some kind of copy protection? I am confused because others on these forums seem to be doing the same thing without any problem.

  2. Have you installed the DVD-RAM driver for the LG GSA-4040B?

  3. I don't know why you are getting the crashes but I use NeoDVD Plus or MovieFactory2 to import the VRO files from DVD-RAM.

Not sure what driver you mean? I bought an OEM drive so it did not come with any software, but XP Pro recognised it and installed drivers. I can drag and drop files to the DVD-RAM in Windows Explorer okay. Is there a specific driver I should install? Where can I get it?

Thanks for your help Synergy. I have now installed the XP driver. Unfortunately it has not solved the problem. Any software I use to access a VRO file stops responding and I can't even end the task from Device Manager. I still wonder if this is some kind of copy protection since I can access the other files on the disc, just not the VRO - but then why are others able to access the VRO files? Wierd.

When you record on DVD-RAm it's like a hard drive and there will be one large file you can edit that file with MPEG2VCR

  8. It's not copy protection. I have a panny ram burner and don't get any such problems on winme or win2k. It sounds like an OS or software related issue - possibly hardware too (hey that's everything then!) but I don't know exactly what you could do to fix it.

Try disabling XP's built in burning capability on the drive. Failing that, remove any UDF software like B's clip, and then all burning software. Another possibility is removing and re-installing your IDE controllers. Also check the drive is cabled and jumpered properly. You should have it as secondary master and use an 80-pin IDE cable, not the ordinary 40-pin ones. Check than DMA is enabled too.

Thanks bobones. Turns out VOB Instant CD/DVD was causing the problem. I ditched it and downloaded Nero (no Broadband, so it took about a week). This is not causing a problem with the VRO files but I have not tried burning with it yet. Some people seem to have problems with it and the 4040B. Fingers crossed.

I have the Panasonic E50 ... I copy the dvd-ram ... vro files... to my hardrive ... takes awhile but no problems.

I use the Toshiba SD-M1712 to read them [$30 bucks Ebay].

Womble mpeg-vcr ... edits them. Remove Commercials.

InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2 converts them. No need really for VRO video files ... it can and does.

TMPGEnc DVD Author ... authors them ... after I've used Womble mpeg-vcr to remove the commercials.
