I have a digital camcorder that records using mpeg4.
The file extension is .asf.
I can watch the video fine with WIndow Media Player.
Am trying to convert this asf file to vcd format.
When opening with Tmmpegenc, I got the error msg - "file *** cannot open, or unsuported".
My best guest is that I have to download some kinda codec, but since I can watch it fine, I guess I already got the codec.
DUnno what to do. Please help!!
Thanks.

First, change the file extension to .wmv and see if that helps, if not, go to the Options-->Environmental setting-->VFAPI plug in. Adjust the Direct Show priority until it is the number one in the list and is at least two or higher.
Hello. -
ON the left of www.dvdrhelp.com click on convert. On the next page follow links to get virtualdub 1.3c which can open asf files.
Then do direct stream copy from virtualdub 1.3c to a new avi file. This conversion will not lose any quality, it is lossless conversion. Then you can convert the new avi file without issues.
*Note* if it is WMV 8 or 9, then this won't work.
try it and see. -
Couldnt open with Virtualdub.
It gave me this error-
"ASF- parse error-- too many segments inpacket at 8000 (2 expected) packet size = 4000, send time 0:00"

I was able to convert the file linked above using TMPGenc. When browsing to load the file just change the "FILES OF TYPE" value to "ALL FILES *.*", and select your ASF/ASX file.
I have installed the ACE Mega Codec pak and WM9 Codecs and have never had an issue. You may wish to install these and see if that resolves the matter. I install the Ace and then the WM9's. Afterwards, you should have just about every Codec imaginable.
** If you use XP -- be sure to setup a retore point just in case. Has never caused an issue with me, though.

FYI ...
Converted using the TMPGenc VCD template and burned the resulting MPG file to RW media using Nero. No problem !!!
