Watch out for verbatim!!!

I have burnt lots of different media and have had like 1 coaster out of 100. Today I was going to test some new verbatim 4x dvd+r. This was an expensive media, so I though no way I will get problems with these
disks.

I burnt 3 dvd+r to day, first they didn´t spin up in my computer dvd, not even the burner recognice them, so I test them in my stanalone
player that never ever have rejected a dvd before. The dvd player tried to read the first dvd for 1 minute, before it spit it out. The
same thing happend for the two next dvd+rs. The strange thing is, the dvd+r was burnt without any errors..........

So watch out for these VERBATIM disks, it's the worst thing I have ever seen. Lucky me I just bought 5 for testing!

What recorder were you using? I've been using the Verbatim Datalife disks with very, very good results with my NEC 1300a. I use the Verbatims out of Singapore--made by Mitsubishi Chemicals and haven't had a bad one yet.

The Verbatim disks from Taiwan are made by CMC Magnetics I believe, and the ones from India are Moser Baen. The best Verbatims are out of Japan and made by Taiyo Yuden. Which variety did you get?

I've been using Verbatim's (-) for about 2 years now and I've never had a bad disc, nor have there been any playback issues in other dvd players. (I record on the Panasonic E-20). The Verbatim's I get are made in Japan.

Gotta look at the media ID's

MCC = good (Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp)
CMC = bad (CMC Magnetics Inc)

Tou never know what you're going to get with Verbatim so I don't even bother. The last thing I want to do is spend $50 on a 50 pk of CMC. Now apparently Memorex is doing the same sh!t.

might seem like a noobish mistake ... but it can happen to anyone.
not recognizing in both the burner and the standalone could be caused by you unchecking the WRITE option ... and have SIMULATION checked.... so the burn will be successful... but both players will not be able to recognize the disks because they are BLANK :P

Used to be a big Verbatim fan, then this happenned.

Now I use TDK.

DatMuthapucka, no don't think so. Have burnt 100 of dvds and these 3 are the first giving me errors. Tried 3 Riteks after and they worked like charm, as all my dvd+r use to do.

Those Verbatim disc should have been the best one, Verbatim DataLifePlus 4x, Advanced AZO 120 mins video. I don't know the media code, because the dvd-rom couldn't read them, so no way to get the media code.

VERBATIM now days seems to "suck hard", seems almost like princo crap to me. Will never buy those disks again!

Which country were they made in? I gave you a list of countries Verbatims are known to be made in, and which ones have been consistently good. If you got some of the CMC Magnetics disks, I don't doubt you could have gotten some poor examples. Basically I never buy Taiwanese disks from any of the major brands, because you can't tell ahead of time who manufactures them. The ONLY Taiwanese disks I would even try would be the Ritek Ridata G04's.

What about Imation brand dvd-r's? Bought two packs of 25 a month ago at office depot. Haven't used any yet, but wishing I had read some of the post's in the "media" section before purchasing anything. I'm fairly new to all this and have been using Verbatim MCC with no problems, I think. Some freezing near the end of the picture. Not sure of the cause of that. Works great in one player, not so great in another.

Well according to the jewel case they came in, this is a MCC product made in Japan and if thats true this should be Verbatims best dvd+r!!

You have to be monumentally unlucky to get bad Verbatim disks out of Japan. Not a normal problem. Too bad you can't get the media id.

It is weird that first time i heard verbatim has some issue. We been doing business with verbatim for a while. It is true that CMC/Ritek/... makes DVD for Verbatim.... I know Verbatim is dropping their price. Maybe there is some quality issue with their disc. But I think most of the online company will issue you a exchange if the disc fail to burn. Agree won't spend more than 1.40 for dvd-r.

Are ALL Verbatim DataLife Plus made in Japan. I know that Verbatim makes discs in different countries but I was told DataLife Plus are made in Japan, is this true?

No. DatalifePlus can come from many different countries. The Japanese and Singapore versions are generally high quality---this post is the first I've ever seen reporting problems with one of the Japanese made disks.

Well, I bought a pack of 5 verbatim dvd+r yesterday.
They are data life plus and advanced azo made in taiwan and dvdinfopro says they are from MCC.
My picky LG 4040B recognizes them as 4x media.
Burned 2 Sony dvd+r made by MCC and they played flawlessly so I expect the same result from this verbatim media.

Never ran into any bad 4x +R disks yet, must be lucky (Memorex, TDK).
