can someone help to confirm my argument with a mate.
he says it should be possible to update firmware of dvd players to make them divx compatible. i.e. add divx codec
but i say there must be hardware that needs altering otherwise all players would have had firmware updates by now with divx codecs included.
can anyone help ressolve this matter

The mpeg decoders in standalone DVD players are usually hardware based. So No, most DVD players could not be made capable of decoding divx with a firmware update.
