  1. I just installed an 80 gig Maxtor slave drive to my 80 gig WD.
I then tried to capture from my Sony DV camera through my Ulead program from my sony to the slave drive.
It seems to hesitate like it isnt fast enough.
When I go directly to my master drive it seems to capture just fine.
Is there an issue with capturing to a slave drive?

Capturing to a slave drive should not be a problem.
Check in the properties of the IDE controllers and make sure that both drives are set to DMA mode. If the slave is set to PIO then it will run too slow for capture.

Might be your drive is faulty/failing.
Try a 'sandra' test to determine data rate
If, as I suspect, you're transferring data via firewire then the DMA issue is really irrelevent, as you're not capturing at all
At least two of my my four drives on my controller are set to PIO and I have no such problems.

  4. I'm sorry.
Where do I find the DMA setting.
I am using XP Home and in the control panel>hardware I cant find the setting.
    Also I am using Firewire.
Also one other small piece of info.
My mastor drive is 100 speed, my slave drive said on the box its 133 speed.
    Does that make and difference?

  5. What's the make and model of your master drive on that channel? Your fastest hard drive on the channel will only be as good and fast as the slowest drive.

What do you have on your secondary IDE channel?

how much would an 8mb buffer compare to a 2mb buffer when it comes to capturing?

    To Brad1140:

IDE settings are a bit hard to find..

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary IDE Channel -> Advanced Settings

Set the 'Transfer Mode' to 'DMA if available'
and check that the 'Current Transfer Mode' says DMA.

This may not be the your solution but it certainly was for me.

  8. I have a Western digital 100 speed on IDE 1 master,the Maxtore w/ 8 meg buffer on IDE 1 slave.
On my IDE 2 I have my Plextor cd burner and my Pioneer DVD burner.

  9. I checked my DMA modes.
Device 0 on my Primary IDE (I am assuming its my 2 hds)
it has "Ultr DMA Mode 5.
Device 1 on my primary IDE it has
    "PIO Mode".
Some one said it doesnt matter.
But I would like to change it to DMA.
    How do I do that?
I really should have known where to look by the way.
Sometime obvious think are easy to forget.

  10. Click DMA if available. Homeboy as wrong, DMA is an issue and you will need dma to have proper performance with the drive.

You will need to reboot to make the change take effect.

After rebooting go back and see what trnasfer mode it is in. If still PIO, or if it disappears, then you are stuck with the issue I have right now. My one channel will only do PIO and i have to RMA my mobo.

last thing to try if it fails dma, then right click>uninstall your IDE channel and rebootskeez.

  11. Duhmez,
    Can you explain one thing.
I really dont know the difference between DMA and PIO.
I will try to learn tonight.
But, why doesnt my properties give me the DMA rather than PIO.
It says "DMA if available" and it seems not.
Why would the DMA be on the first device and not the second?
    What is RMA your mobo?
    thanks for the info.

Return Merchandise Authorization. RMA or sen it back cause it is broke. More likely, the Bios is not configured properly or there is a hardware/software conflict.

Next boot, check the bios for how the Hard Drives are detected( I suggest Auto). Check to see if there are any DMA settings in the bios also.

  13. GOT IT!
I went to the bios and it said none in the second ide option.
I chose auto and it instantly recognized the drive.
So I went to my Ulead and it captured just fine.
My system also said DMA for the slave drive.
I never thought of checking bios because I assumed it saw the drive because I have been using it for other file operations.
    Thanks for all the help.Brad

    Cheers.

Sorry I didn't see your question earlier. I had the exact problem last Sunday when I installed a slave drive in my Dell 2400. I was surprised that Windows XP could access the drive even though it was not configured in the BIOS.

    Happy capturing.

  17. Same thing happened to me with my new Dell system. Bios shows as second IDE as disable but the OS was able to detect it but was not using it max capability. After I set it to atuo then it shows as DMA5. however you still might want to set your "DMA if applicable" uner Device Manger instead of PIO. It makes a big difference.
