  1. I recentlybought a few blank label (just a white surface with no name) dvd -r from a small custom computer shop. When i tried to copy one of my dvds i got a message sayin that this is illegal or incompatable medium. However my Nero burning rom does recognise it as a blank dvd -r. Is there anyway i can make my dvd writer i.e.Nec ND -1300A, compatable with this medium?
I have heard about firm ware but i do not really know what this is or if its relliable or dangerous. Can anyone tell me what it is? or if its reliable or dangerous?
    Pleese help if you can,
    thanx
its mine.... and i can whatever i want with it

buying blank dvd's with no name usually isn't a good idea =/

and with the nec 1300a i have ordered one but haven't got it yet. i've heard great stuff about "harries hacked firmware" u might want to look into that.

    hope this helps, josh

Just got my ND-1300 a little more than a week ago, and found that the firmware was 1.07 Latest version is 1.08, and comes as a Windoze app. First run of upgrade stopped half thru, but second try (after reboot) went without a hitch. Don't know what good it did, but I think I read something about "extended media compatibility".
Just curious: How did you go about copying that DVD? You know you can't do a straight store bought DVD to DVD-R/+R /-RW/-RW copy...
Try DVDInfoPro to determine what your no name DVD-R really is.

  5. no i didn't just try and copy from a store bought dvd. I know all about that. Where would i be able to get this firmware revision1.08? how do i get the dvd writer firmware updated? i looked at the dvd writers properties and i have firmware revision 1.05. Would that be much different? Is firmwae safe?or could it damage the writer?

I've tried both firmware 1.08 and 1.09 and they both suck. I've always used SW Technology disks (-R) which are made by OPTODISK one of the best manufacturer. Never had a problem with either version 1.05 nor 1.07. I couldn't however get more than 2x writing speed even though the new disks were 1x-4x. I upgraded the firmware to achive this and then the writer started to spit out the disks. After a few tries the writer accepted the disk and I managed to burn it (still just 2x). These disks were however unplayable on my friends standalone dvd (previous disks played just fine). I ran the disks through dvdInfo to check if SW had changed manufacturer on me. IT SAID ILLEAGAL medium or somethin. Reinstalled firmware 1.07 and voila the disks and burner works like a charm. My conclusion is that NEC screwed up something in the latest releases 'cause OPTODISK is not a blank/noname disk...

  9. How do you know which firmware you have??

I have the NEC-1300A burns everything without any problems. Got it back in July 2003.

*EDIT* I found the link but mine is OEM not retail and the README file says that it won't work on OEM's anyone tried this 1.09 on OEM's?

  10. 808smokey, i bought an oem, and upgraded fw from 1.05 to 1.07 no probs, by oem it refers to oems as in a drive in a bought computer, not the same as buying a drive yourself, from a store, sold as oem.

My NEC 1300a has burned about 100 DVDR's so far. 1 true coaster to date. Been exclusively RITEK G04's (-R 4x) or TDK 2x's. Also some RITEK -RW's at 2x. Zero problems.

When using cheap media, your firmware doesn't know waht to do with it. And you can't burn -R's at 1x with a 1300, which may be your problem!!

wii give you info about your drive and media. download it again. maybe the first copy was corrupt.
OEM, not OEM ...does not matter.

  14. NEC firmware instruction stated it will not work with OEM drives. There seems to be some confusion here. I think they really meant it will not work with OEM drives sold under another brand name. My drive has the OEM label but it is still NEC. I believe if the label NEC-ND-1300A (OEM) is on the drive, then it is a genuine NEC but a "bulk" version (no packaging) and is supported by NEC firmware.

If someone thinks this is wrong, please let me know! Btw, I already burned my NEC OEM drive with 1.09 firmware (http://www.necd.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/557) and no problems so far.
