  1. Iam facing the following problem. When viewing the DVD material from DVD disk, Iam getting video with &^%$@& (jitter or distortion - I don't know how to describe it well). Like a flickering video, only on horizontal screen pans. When viewing THE SAME matelial (ie same VIDEO_TS folder) from my Hard Disk (into the same PC) everything is fine. I tried all possible options (Ulead Media Studio mpeg encoding, Canopus Procoder, several types of DVD disks, including DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW). I burn my material using NERO 6.
I repeat that the problem appears only while viewing my movie through DVD disk (I tried it in several DVD players). When it is reproduced (the same video_TS folder) from hard disk, everything is fine. Even a simple copy of VIDEO_TS folder to hard disk works fine.
I have tried many possible conversions, including the change of field order. NOTHING...
I don't know if it is a simple problem or a guru challenge.

Iam not a newbie but Iam almost ready to give up

    Please help.

    Thanks

Obviously in the reading side of things. What happens using a set top box ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

OK, we need to develop a game plan.

    The story so far....

We have a backed up DVD on our hard drive ready to burn. Playback from HD is perfect. We burn it, playback from disc causes flicker in both PC and set top player. Copy these same files from burnt disc to HD and perfect playback again...

We know that the PC and set top box can playback other DVDs burnt using the exact same methods and the exact same media.

How am I going so far.....
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Given the information based both on the original post and the excellently summarized preceeding post, I believe this to be the issue:

    FIELD ORDER is incorrect.

  6. Field order would be my guess as well.

I had the same issues, so i flipped the field order around and that seemed to fix the problem.

  7. I do not believe fieldorder is responsible, as A) this would not vary when played from HD, and B) he said he tried it.

ALKMAN - when you say the copied VIDEO_TS folder plays OK from HD, is this copied from the ORIGINAL SOURCE or from the burned, copied disk? THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! If you have not tried to re-copy from the burnt disk, do this and reply.

Has the original source been re-encoded or is it being copied unaltered in any way? If altered, is the VIDEO folder you mention the original or the altered version?

If the VIDEO folder is OK on the HD, copied to disk is bad, copied from SAME DISK to HD is good again, this proves that the file itself and any encoding methodology is correct, therefore the problem is burner, software, or media. Copying the file back as data will often ignore errors that would show up in playback.

My first guess would be media, as this is easiest to test - get some different disks. Second would be burning software, try some different progs, again easy and cheap. Last is the worst, burner - RMA if possible or try in another machine.

    Great stuff Nelson.

Media seems like a likely cause....
    If in doubt, Google it.

  9. First of all, I would like to thank you for your answers. Concerning my problem...

...YES, at least on my HD, the SAME VIDEO_TS folder copied from DVD media plays fine. And this issue should us drive to the conclussion that something is wrong with the media or the burning program. BUT...

...as I wrote in my first message, I have already tried many different DVD types (PHILIPS, TDK etc, including DVD+RW) and two different programs (Nero 6.3 and CopyToDVD). The result? NOTHING. Always the SAME problem. The strange thing is that the same chain of DVD creation (capturing, video conversion, authoring) has been done in the past, using the same tools (Ulead MS 6.5, instead of Ulead MS7) and it was successful. The original material was and is from an analog video camera and have been digitised (AVI) using the passthough function on my SONY digital TRV50 (I don't know if the analog ring in the processing chain makes any difference - anyway it has been done successfully in the past)

I also tried (using Ulead MS7) to convert the AVI to MPEG in FRAME BASED field order and the result is that it plays fine on my PC, but still with the same problem on my set top player (an expensive one – PIONEER 757I – if it makes a difference)

Now I decide to make a shot (20 secs) film (AVI) and to concerted in all possible ways, using both Canopus Procoder and Ulead Media Studio.

I will let you know anyway…

(Meanwhile, If you have any other idea, please shoot...)

    Thanks again for your time…

    Alkis.
