When I go into the "Compression..." section of the Audio menu in Virtualdub and select the MPEG Layer-3 codec, the highest bitrate it has available is 56kpbs. I've tried clicking "Show all formats" but that still doesn't give me anything higher than 56k. Anyone know what might be wrong, and how I might fix it? Thanks in advance!

Install the Lame MP3 ACM Codec and choose the lame mp3 encoder in Virtualdub instead.

Why, that plan is so cunning you could slap a tail on it and call it a weasel! Seriously though, thanks for the help!

  4. Yes, LAME ACM is much better than using any Fraunhofer codec in Windows for encoding MP3 audio. I can actually hear the difference--Fraunhofer generates more "shshshsh" hissing sort of noise in the audio.

  5. Which version of the Lame ACM codec should we install, it seems every other version locks up my machine.

Lame v3.92 ACM seemed the most stable but how is the sound quality.

  6. In general, any LAME MP3 encoder version 3.90 or higher is good. The ACM implimentation may be different or buggy compared to the command-line. But hey it's all free and it's better than any other MP3 encoder software.

Different versions of the LAME ACM are around the 'net:

  7. I've heard that Fraunhofer is actually better at low bit rates, and Lame comes into its own around 128kps, and then is untouchable.
