  1. I am trying to split a divx avi that is 1.4 gigs into something more managable for cdrs. That part is easy with Virtual Dub.

My question is I have one large .srt file for the entire 1.4 gig avi. Is there a way to still use this file for the splits? Can I leave it as a single file and the separated avis will still recognize it?

Or should I split the srt up also and name the files like

    avi1.avi
    avi1.srt

    avi2.avi
    avi2.srt

And just manually cut/paste the subs into their respective parts?

    Interesting problem you have there.

The first problem is that once you split the AVI file into parts, then you don't have valid .srt timings for the second, third, ... parts. As the .srt file is a single one, timing in there is based on 0:00:00.00 time for the first frame of the AVI.

If you split it, say, at 30 min, then you should split the .srt file appropriatelly and "retime" the subtitles so that you remove exactly 30 minutes out of every one.

I don't know of a program that can help you there - but have not dealt with AVI subtitle streams much.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Subtitle workshop can split srt subs and it fixes the time codes.

  4. I was afraid you were going to say that. There's no way I'll take the time to hand correct the timings.

What if I embedded the subs into the original avi first, then split them in vdub?

  5. ahh very cool. It looks like I can split it at the same frame as i use in vdub, Baldrick. Is that corrent? Just split the srt at the exact same frame as I split the main avi at?

And this will retime the the second srt to match the second avi?
