  1. I bought a new computer a few months ago that came with a CD-RW/DVD+RW/R writer. It is a HP 300n DVD writer. I can't find anywhere in the specs for the DVD or in the guide that came with the computer what speed it reads and writes at. And I can't even find that model on HP's website. The reason I want to know this is because I bought a 25 pack of Memorex DVD+R last week and when I tried to burn a DVD on one of the disks it didn't work. I noticed there was a warning that came in the package that said something about upgrading the firmware if your DVD writer writes at less than 4x. Since I don't know what the speed is on mine, I don't know if I need to upgrade. Does anyone know how to check the speed on my writer?

From this page on HP's site:

It appears that your drive is actually the 300i drive. It just reports itself as a HP DVD Writer 300n to your system. The 300i appears to write DVD+R at 4x and DVD+RW at 2.4x. It don't own this drive, so I'm just going by what I see on their site.

  4. Another question... so if my DVD writer writes at 4x then why did the DVD I burned on the Memorex DVD not work? I usually use Sony DVD+R and have also used TDK before also. Both of these are also for 4x speed writers.

  5. so i presume with other media you're not having problems? some of the recent memorex is bad media that won't properly burn (power calibration errors) at 4x and needs to be burned at 2.4 (very lame, i know) .
