  2. You're not alone. Here's a poost from the Macintouch web site:

"Paul Hughes describes a timeout problem with Apple's QuickTime MPEG component:

It appears the updated MPEG-2 playback component that Apple provided for QT 6.4 has a timeout. As of 12:10:01 a.m. December 15 I can no longer play back MPEG-2 files under either Panther or jaguar with QT 6.4. The QT discussion board at Apple has lots of other reports of this phenomenon. This renders DVD Studio Pro 2 all but useless and will also affect a lot of other video production workflows, unless Apple fixes the problem fast. So far nothing via Software Update or the QuickTime updater. "

  6. Yes, I just updated to 10.3.1 today and now it doesn't work. I deleted it and reinstalled, but no luck. Way to go Apple.

unfortunately (i know i spoke to u about this briefly) you need to go back to quicktime 6.3 to get the older mpeg-2 decoder to work... it doesnt work in 6.4 hence the reason apple needed to update the decoder for 6.4. i dont know if its even possible to downgrade to 6.3 in panther... oh well guess we just have to wait for a fix from apple.

from the apple quicktime discussion forum:
    " All,

We are aware of this issue and we are investigating. Further information will be forthcoming here, a Knowledge Base document, or both.

Reports indicate setting your comp's date back to before the 15th of Dec. will get it working again.

  13. Here's what to do (from tofay's MacIntouch):

Bruce Yolton explained what Apple is doing to resolve the sudden time-out bug with its MPEG-2 encoding software:

Although Apple hasn't posted a tech note yet, last night they updated their MPEG-2 software for Quicktime to fix the 12-15-03 expiration bug.
    * To get the updated software, go to the Apple Store, choose review account from the upper right of the store, login, choose Software Download Purchases, and download QT 6 MPEG-2 Playback - Mac OS once again.
    * The new software package will have two folders, "For QuickTime 6.3" and "For QuickTime 6.4 and later". (The outdated software had folders named "QuickTime MPEG2 6.3" and "QuickTime MPEG2 6.4".

  14. And of course (as I just discovered) this does nothing for those who got the plug-in via FCP or DSP. The above only applies to hose who bought the plug-in in the Apple Store. I guess we'll have to wait for a Software update version.

Tried to reinstall 6.3 under X.2.3 no dice, won't even launch. Don't think 6.3 is compatible with Panther.

  16. Go here:

    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/mpeg2playback/download/

and enter your serial number (FCP or DSP) to get the new mpeg2 plug-in.

    Also OSX 10.3.2 is available.

  17. Oh, and while you're at it, you might as well bite the bullet and download Quicktime 6.5 and iTunes 4.2. Apple must think we all have a lot of bandwidth sitting around with nothing else to do.

  18. If I download QT 6.5 won't my pro number for 6.4 be rendered useless or is that only when they go from say, 5.x to 6.0?

Strange... I don't see any update for iTunes in my software update. There was an iPhoto one yesterday though, is that what you mean?
