  1. Hi I'm new to dvd-burning... actually I'm before new... I haven't got a burner as of yet. This is where you come in.

I'm considering to buy a Plextor 708A or an LG GSA-4040B. They cost the same (about 180$ here), but the dealer includes 10 Memorex DVD+RW 4x discs with the LG burner (costs about 50$ here).

I'm very uncertain of what drive to select, considering the deal above. I am in urgent need of help, so any responds would be very appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

  2. FYI, the LG GSA-4040B can only write DVD+RW at 2.4X, so getting the 4X DVD+RW discs with the LG model is quite a waste of money. In short, if you need the DVD-RAM function, get the LG. Otherwise get the Plextor since it's a much better DVD writer. There is currently about $60 to $70 difference between these two models, which pretty much reflects the values perceived by the consumers.

Personally I would go for the LG, I've burnt over 60 DVD-r's and some DVD+R and RW with perfect results, unless you want to stick to DVD+R,
which is the only media you can burn at 8x, go for the LG :P

Also DVD+r cost more!. as does the drive.

  4. Otherwise LG has a new writer out, the GSA-4081B, that supports 8x DVD+R and 4x DVD+RW (the rest of the specs are pretty much the same as the GSA-4040B).
But if you don't need DVD-RAM I would go with the Plextor.

  5. Thanks guys

Don't quite know why i didn't catch the 4x rw difference.
As I don't really have any particular use for DVD-RAM, I think I'll go get the Plextor, as a nice christmas present for myself.

Oh by the way... Is there any significant difference between the "sub-models", like say Plextor 708A/T3 and 708A/T3K ?

The Plextor drive will burn at 8X too. And agreed, if you don't need DVD-RAM, you can't go wrong with it IMHO.

Plextor has a OEM version of 708A which doesn't include a software bundle. If you can get a OEM version then it's a few dollars cheaper. The bundled software isn't that great anyway so getting a OEM version of it would be fine. There has been talk about some models being different but nothing can be proven as far as I know from reading different Plextor forum sites. Here's a link you can read but it doesn't exactly state that there is a difference between 708A/T3 & 708A/T3K.

Buy the Plextor burner you won't be disappointed.
