  1. Dear friends,

I´m new with all this DivX thing, and I want to buy a DVD-Rom. But before that I want to know something really important.
Could I fit one entire movie (DivX format) in just one 700 MB CD-R ?
How many hours can I fit in a CD-R with good quality ?

Please, I need that information ...

    Thanx ...

Take a look at WHAT IS and the VCD and SVCD sections. These are the formats available for you. VCD is roughly 80 minutes on a 80 min CD, SVCD 40-60 minutes, depending on what your quality preferences are.
DivX file size is of no significance here, just how long (in time) the movie is.

  3. mats, gabriel does not actually say that he want to convert a divx file to VCD or SVCD, although this may well be the case. As I read it he want to know if he can fit a movie encoded with divx onto 1 CDR. If this is indeed the question then the answer is yes with pretty good quality. Although some people still prefer to put divx movies on 2 discs to retain as much quality from the original DVD as possible. But for me, the quality would be acceptable for a 90-120 min movie encoded well with divx. Any more than 2 hours and consider going to 2 CDR's.

Hehehehe: Size does matter. The size of a DivX file affects the final quality. There are many factors involved such as Audio Bitrate, Resolution and FPS. Basically a 1 CDR DivX is Never Ever going to look like the DVD original. A 2 CDR DivX can look nearly DVD Quality (albeit usually lower resolution, IE 640x???), and a 3 CDR DivX is nearly always DVD quality.

You have to allow for length also, that is a 2 CDR 90 Minute DivX can be DVD Quality, whereas a 3 hour 2 CDR DivX can look nasty (if it's high-res). Encode a few samples and see for yoruself.

  5. Well,

I like this forum 'cause there are a lot of friends like you, thank you by the answers.
Actually, I don´t want to split up my Movies in 2 CD-Rs or more. I want just one. And about the quality, I also don´t want a PERFECT quality, I need some quality like VHS or a little better. And the format is DivX, 'cause I´ll connect my NoteBook on my TV Set.
So, after all these answers, my dear friends, I think I could fit one 2 hours movie in just one 700MB CD, right ? Or even 2hours and some minutes....

    Thanx...

You're right! I'm obviously reading what's not there sometimes.
I'd not recooment much over 1.5 hrs for a one CD DivX, but that's my opinion. It also depends much on the material. High action scenes/movie? Nope. Use 2 CD's. Low action/motion? Might well squeeze 2 hrs on a CD.

I regularly convert my tape collection of off air tv movies and find that a 1.30 min movie is very acceptable quolity on 1 CD-r. the most important factor is the source material , if it is good then a 2 hour movie will fit on a single cd . As these can be purchased for about 15 pence and a standalone divx player at £90. then it is a very prudent way of backing up your movie collection.
