  1. This may sound like a stupid question - but I've just read through a bunch of guides and it still isn't clear to me.

What files are needed for a backup DVDR to work in a standalone player?

According to one guide I just need to click on "Select Main Movie Files" in DVD Decrypter. But that seems to only select the VTS*.IFO and VTS*.VOB files. Do I need the BUP files? What about the VIDEO_TS.BUP, .IFO and .VOB files?

When I try to burn using the Nero DVD_VIDEO template I get the following error when I try to just burn the "Main Movie Files" that DVD Decrypter selects:

Required file 'VIDEO_TS.IFO' is not present
Required file 'VIDEO_TS.BUP' is not present
Required file 'VTS_01_0.BUP' is not present
    DVD-Video files compliance test failed

Do I need to select those files as well as the main movie files?

Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

  2. Read the 'What is DVDR' section to the left. DVD Videos require 2 folders:

VIDEO_TS - contains VOB and IFO files
    AUDIO_TS - normally empty

The VOB files are multiplexed MPEG files that contained: video, audio, and/or subtitles. Multiplexed means that each of these assests is it's own elementary stream (ES) but they have been merged (aka muxed) into one file.

The IFO files contain the info about what's in the VOB files (chapter points, runtime, DAR, etc).

To backup an already made DVDR disc here's what you do:

    1) D/load and install DVD Decrypter (freeware, look to the left under tools or at http://www.doom9.org)

    2) Run DVD Decrypter

    3) Choose "Mode | ISO - Read" and copy an ISO image of the DVDR disc to your HD

    4) Choose "Mode | ISO - Write", select the ISO image file, then burn it to a blank DVDR disc

That's it. As always for futher questions take a look at the guides to the left under DVD Backup or at doom9. Luck

BUP files are just BackUPs of IFO files, but you do need them. By default, the minimum you need is VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_0.BUP & VTS_01_1.VOB.

If you only want the main movie and you know that it will fit on 1 DVDR then I would recommend ripping only the VTS_01_n.VOB files and use IFOEdit to create VIDEO_TS and VTS_01_0 IFOs and BUPs.

You can get into problems just copying the VIDEO_TS files because Nero may tell you that there are references to files that you are not including.

For all round performance I would recommend using DVDShrink. You honestly can't go wrong and it will do everything you will ever need.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Sheeesh.....keep it simple.

You have to author the files after ripping.

Once you've ripped the DVD with decrypter, use software like DVD Shrink or DVD2One to process/compress the files into the form Nero requires. If you use DVD Shrink, you can use that by itself to rip and compress.

You'll end up with some IFO's, some BUP's, and some VOB's.

Once you have your authored files, you drag the files into the VIDEO_TS folder that Nero provides in DVD-Video mode.

  5. Copying DVDR or single-layer (DVD5) :
    1. Rip the disc: DVD Decrypter Mode->ISO->Read
    2. Burn: DVD Decrypter Mode->ISO->Write

Copying main movie from dual-layer (DVD9):
    1. Rip with DVD Decrypter. File mode. Edit->Select main movie files
    2. Process with DVD2One (Only DVD2One can work from main VOBs and their IFO!!!!!)
    or
    1. Rip all files
    2. Process with DVD Shrink (or any other tool). Reauthor, copy main movie.

    Copying the whole DVD9 disc
    1. Rip all files in file mode
    2. Process with your favourite tool

Nero Express. DVD-Video. Copy all the files you got to the VIDEO_TS folder. Burn.
