I bought my first computer dvd player and it doesn't play movies nor can I make copies. Is there some kind of driver or player I need to play dvds. Maybe some kind of region codec.

You will need software that is able to play MPEG2. Normally software ships with a DVD-ROM (I was unsure from your post whether you have a DVD-ROM or DVD burner ???). Some ship with PowerDVD, others with Ulead products.

How are you trying to make copies ??
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. It would be nice to know the name and model of your DVD player.

It should have came with some software. Did you install the software?

It will not playwithout a viewing program like PowerDVD, for example.

Pioneer DVR-106 is a DVD burner. you should have got a disc with it that had Nero and a couple of other programs on it. You might find that Media Player 9 plays DVDs if you do not wish to purchase anything. I would buy PowerDVD - nothing gets anywhere near it for DVD playback.
    If in doubt, Google it.
