Does anyone have a VCR, a VHS recorder (in the UK), one which has either...

the conventional s-video out port, ie the small, penny-sized circular type (not the scart type) or

has composite out ports, ie the yellow, white and red?

Needs to be no more than £175.00

I've searched google (argos, currys, dixons etc.) and having read many, many, many manufacturers websites all proclaim to have s-video out but only via (a 21 pin) scart.
None, absolutley none have the tradional composites out (the only have the scart and L+R audio out (ie. no yellow/video out).

Most of these are around the £125.00 mark.

    Many thanks,
    Will

  3. As you seem to know, most UK VCR's hav composite out via scart. So why not save a load of money and buy a Scart to Composite converter. Maplins sell them for a few pounds.

Click Here and enter scart in the search box

I have three of these adapters (all for different uses, but all for PC/Video work), but I'm yet to be convinced of their reliability.
    Thanks though

  5. Will, there's absolutely no problems with their reliability. They are just simple plugs. As with any plug, don't constantly plug and un-plug it or the contacts will start to wear and you'll have an intermittent connection.

    Hi energ...
    How's dvdsontap working out?
Shame I got shafted with the recommend scheme

The s-vhs VCR's I've seen specify a 21 pin scart, otherwise (I guess) the signal will revert back to a standard VHS quality pricture.
Do you know if these simple, cheap scart adapters would affect the quality output of a scart socket which has an s-vhs capability?
I don't want to go to the expense of an s-vhs VCR if I'm going to lose the ability to output an s-vhs quality picture.
I have a Canopus ADVC-100 you see, and want to ensure I pump the best signal into it I can.

Also, as I know the field you work in do you think the s-video VCR's are worth the extra £30.00 or so?

And, if I'm imputting to the ADVC-100 what effect would a cheap mono VCR have on my 'captures'?
Should I insist on a stereo VCR?

I'm a little naive on this
    Thanks,
    Will

    always a stereo VCR. always.

if you've played back an old mono tape in a stereo VCR, you'll notice a horrible constant hiss. if you get a mono VCR, you get this on every tape you play in it, stereo or mono. so, if you want that hiss to be in all your captures, go for it

anyways.. do you tend to just listen to the left speaker (or the right one) when you play a CD? i didn't think so.. so why limit yourself to one-channel mono?

on the other hand, a good quality stereo VHS recording is near CD quality, and a lot better than an audio cassette or a mono VHS recording.

    stereo all the way.

I have a JVC S-VHS machine and have no complaints with it. Cost £150 from Currys. I think thay are about £120 online, but then you don't have those "Dixon's Group Experts" to keep you right!! I never actually use the S-Video out, but then again don't use it for anything other than basic timeshifting. I haven't bought a VHS tape in years! It's so handy with the DTT card in the PC just to grab the raw data stream, re-mux it and burn onto a DVDR disc. Who the hell needs tape in this scenario Already have my "taping list" ready for Christmas telly (yes, I am that sad!)

DVD's on Tap are great. I currently have "Christmas with the Simpsons" out. Intend changing to the 2 disc plan in January, so I should always have one disc here (currently I have to wait about 5 days between rentals). I believe that they have changed their "Refer a Friend" scheme and now have a code system which seems to make more sense than remembering which e-mail address you should have given.

I wouldn't worry too much about S-Video connections, most professional equipment here doesn't have them - just composite outs. And if its a non-S tape then there is no benefit to using the Y/C Out.

    Thanks energy.
What do you make of the nicam option?
Should I just buy a mono VCR for transfering VHS footage to DVD?

  10. Depends on whether your video tapes are hi-fi sound encoded or not. I have used hi-fi stereo sound since 1985 so it is a must for me.

  13. Will, I see that DVD's on Tap are about to change to LOVEFiLM.com. Sounds like it is some porn thing (even though the e-mail makes no mention of it) but who knows whats in store!
