  1. I have an AVI (or non DVD MPG) which I want to convert to DVD MPG so I could author it with TMPGAuthor. I used to use TMPGEnc to do such convertions and I want to start using different tools because I'm not satisfied with the quality of MPG that TMPGEnc produces - motion is not smooth.

That other tool I can use?

Other than being slow as a snail TMPGEnc is one of the best software MPEG encoders you can use. If your output is poor then it is your fault for not correctly configuring TMPGEnc or the fault of your source material (poor quality to begin with).

Having said that you can try CINEMA CRAFT ENCODER which comes in an inexpensive version called CCE BASIC but if you can't get TMPGEnc to work right ... well ... good luck with CCE. Although both are powerfull TMPGEnc in terms of ease-of-use is a children's book with CCE being an adult novel over 1,000 pages.

    Try this link:

This is a website with a guide on using TMPGEnc. They don't cover everthing 100% but it is still fairly good at covering a lot of issues with using TMPGEnc.

But this hobby is mostly trail and errors.

  4. Folks, I read that TMPGEnc is one of the best and I read the article that FulciLives suggested. I tried everything - wizard/non-wizard, lowest bitrate/highest bitrate - the quality is OK but the motion of the large objects is shaky. I had a good original and after I used DVDShrink I've got everything as on the original, even the motion (and 10 !! times faster).

I need something simple (like DVDShrink) but for AVI convertions. If CINEMA CRAFT ENCODER is that complex, I'd rather used something else. Is there anything else but TMPGEnt and CINEMA CRAFT ENCODER?

  6. Yes, you might try the MainConcept encoder. But the demo version has a watermark encoded into everything you process.

It is surprising (and somewhat rare) that you have not produced excellent, if not exceptional, results with TMPGEnc. I'd be interested in knowing how MainConcept works for you.
