While many in Canada feared a new levy on DVD+-R discs, in a surprise move the Copyright Board of Canada denied a motion by the Canadian Private Copying Collective to establish a CAN$2.17 duty on recordable DVD discs.

It found "that the evidence available at this time does not clearly demonstrate that these recording media are ordinarily used by individuals for the purpose of copying"

A new levy was placed on MP3 players however, "$2 for each recorder with a memory capacity of up to 1 Gigabyte (Gb), $15 for each recorder with memory capacity of more than 1 Gb and up to 10 Gbs, and $25 for each recorder with memory capacity of more than 10 GBs."

Blank CDRs will keep their existing levy of 21¢ and CD-RWs 77¢. (Press release is here).

    first.

  3. Surely by any logic cdrw should have a lower tax than cdr?
Note on mp3 player tax .. the size of your megabytes really does matter here 999mbs tax a 1001mbs tax b . what about flash memory? compact flash now available in 1gb slabs.. these cards will soon be reaching 4gb capacity!
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

  4. They are just big fat theives! They just want money. They don't care if some one is using for there home movies or own record data keeping. They just want to take money and say they are helping artists yeah right..... The CEO only takes a bonus first and then pays all the people in the office a bonus and leaves the artist a pretty penny. Then they go and ask to raise the levies again. BIG FAT THEIVES!

People 'steal' from them and they 'steal' from people.

I don't think either side can claim moral high ground here.

  7. so if there putting a levy on mp3 players to give to the artists then they are saying its ok to get mp3 files for download.
as this seems to be some sort of compensation for the artists because of downloads

  8. It sounds like another tax that goes into the general fund. They do that here in the states too,the legislators vote in a "temporary" tax that turns into a permanent tax.
Take a look at the taxes on your utility bills,it's highway robbery.

  9. Truth is little or even none of this money will fall in the hands of artists. The corporate crooks will take care of that. Putting retarded taxes on things of such will just about guarantee the sales continue to stay low. All the tightening of the thumb screws is not going to bring on a massive increase in sales just peeve the population more. Well also the thing is when I actually see some music quality I wouldn't mind having. My buying will increase.
