Help :Backing up compressed copied DVD

Hi Guys

As I am new to DVD backing up, I have looked around the support forums to find out the best advise on how to back up a compressed DVD.

The burner I have is the pioneer 106d , the programmes I am using are “clone DVD” and “Any DVD” to compress and burn to DVD.

The Compressed DVD plays and works fine on my pc and on my DVD player.

The problem is when I come to copying the compressed copied DVD .

If I use clone DVD to make a copy of the compressed copied DVD it comes up with an error saying invalid file and will not read the disk !!

I have tried Nero 6 to do a 1:1 copy of the compressed copied DVD and it completes to around 94% and then starts to burn really slow and then stops.

I suppose the question I am asking is if you copy a DVD as a compressed DVD are you able to make a copy of the copy.

Any help would be great as I have not had my burner long and it’s all new to me !!

i no you said it played alright on your dvd player but did it play al the way through with no probs if so try copying disk to disk without copying to harddrive first might help and yes you can copy a compressed dvd

have had problems with doggy play back on some Dvd's i have backed up but, this one works ok, the compression rate on the CloneDVD was around 68%, I have also tried DVD decrypter and that too has problems with it,

How do u get you copy’s of copy’s to work and what programs do u use !!

I've found that I sometimes get playback problems doing a disc to disc copy with Nero.

I will usually rip to hard disc first then burn with either Nero or Copy2DVD.

Cheers for all the help, I now know that a compressed copied dvd can be recopied again!!
However I have tried some others I have done and they too have the same problem as the other, Could it be that I have compressed them too much i.e. 68% or is this the norm when trying to backup a DVD with Menus and extras,

Any help would be great!!

I have a good bit of trouble with that because I use cheap media.
The players are good about just skipping errors and not telling
anybody. It's mostly that there are apparently hard to read spots.
When they do that I read them with the burner.

The media I am using is mirror platinum 4.7G, and I have used both burner and play to try and back up the compressed copy DVD.

Is there a limit to how compressed the disk can be on CloneDVD or is it just the more compressed to DVD the poor the film quality.

I have looked around and I have read that because my operating systems is xp I need to install a adaptecs new ASPI, is this true.

Also which is the best operating system Win XP or ME, 98 for backing up DVD’s

A DVD copy is just a set of folders and data files on a DVD.
Anything that will read the disk will do, including just the
normal operating system file utilities. If you can't open
files on your copy , it is because the drive can't read them ,
not because of some kind of protection or compression.

W2K and XP are better for playing with video because
1. They are newer
2. They can deal with files larger than 4G.

If you had verified your DVD's after burning they would have failed. This isn't an issue with DVD Video/VCD/SVCD (MPEG is designed to deal with disk errors). I even see commercial DVD's now and then with an error, again no big deal.

However, Copying a disk is not error tolerant. Any disk copy will fail if there's a read error in the source. All disk copying is based on Data copying, and that has to be eror free.

So, to make sure it always works, rip the DVDR with DVDDecryptor to ISO mode, then burn the same way. They will not be exact copies, since you have to tell DVDDecryptor to ignore errors.

Cheer’s for all your help, I think I am beginning to get to the bottom of the problem,
However when I use DVDDecryptor to copy as iso image it takes along time and it keeps having read errors, so if I tell DVDDecryptor to ignore errors. Will it speed up the write !!

Could you use DVD Shrink to rip the copy to your hard drive, then burn the files back to disc? I have not tried this, but don't see why it would not work.

Sure , If it fails to read half the disk , the subsequent write should
be twice as fast
