depends on what your trying to compress, if ur trying to make a divx/xvid video then search for a biterate calculator.....what are u trying to do?

  3. make a Xvid/Divx (prolly Xvid it seems to be smaller) Im trying to compress a 600MB video file as low as i can without losing much quality. With Xvid its estimated at about 380MB, but I think i can do better, i didnt change the bitrate or anything, and i want to know how.

actually, with xvid when u configure u can put in the size u want the file to be and it will automaticly give it the most bitrate to meet that file size, what program are u using to compress?

  5. virtual dub,

im thinking 60 MB, is that reasonable? its something like 1.5MB per minute

Oh ya, and audio compression. On some tests ive done DivX audio V2 seems to be the best, is that what u were thinking ?

i don't know about audio, and don't wanna give u any info i'm not sure about...as far as video i've always used xvid in the past but divx 5.1.1 is actually really good also, there's also something called 3ivx that is the best i have ever seen, its amazing hehe, anyways i'm not sure about a bitrate calcular for it but i haven't really looked i guess.

  7. what is your source format? what is the res? animated? non? noisy? clean? as stated above if your going to use xvid just input the filesize you want and it will do the rest. just dont expect miracles if your going for low low bitrate encode at high res. filtering can help with compression and cleaning up low bitrate encodes but even then filters do have limits and may leave your output file messy and unacceptable if overused or several filters in a wrong order.
if you are dealing with a compressed file such as xvid/divx or similar you may have a hard time getting that 600mb file down to 60mb with out much loss of quality. in fact you can count on it. if it is uncompressed video you may have a good chace. how long is the video 30minutes? the only true way to tell how many bits to give a certain file and have it look good is 1.compressability test. 2.trial and error, take a small clip and keep doing it over and over at different settings and filters(if needed) until you like the outcome. i tend to lean toward optioin 2 myself seeing how sometimes comp tests are not 100% reliable and my eyes tell me if it is good for me.

  8. OK after much consideration I converted it to 3ivx with a bitrate avg of 110 . The resolution was small and the audio I compressed good with MP3. Its 50 mins

I reduced the file from 600 MB to 400 MB , but for a resolution of like 30 by 200 I should be able to do better. I just watched a video that was 800 by 600 Divx 5 30 mins, great resolution and it was only 200 MB
