  1. Sorry if this question has been asked before... I used search, but didn't quite find an answer.

What's the BEST encoder to make SVCDs from DVDs without lossing any quality? I've been trying to rip a few Music Videos that have alot of movement but they still come out a little pixely in some scenes.

I use TMPGENC and DVD2SVCD, if they are the best, does anybody have a great (lossless) template (I don't care if the conversion takes alot).

  2. There are NO encoders that will encode from DVD to SVCD without losing ANY quality.

    It's an easy calculation:
Quality is a direct function of bitrate:the lower the bitrate, the lower the quality. There is no way to preserve quality while reducing the bitrate (that is what you do, when you convert from DVD to SVCD).Even the best VBR encoders can't do anything about that.

Expecially if the source is a music video!

It is the most extreme difficult source to encode. SVCD/CVD are limited to ~2800kb/s (counting 192Kb audio) which is not enough to support extreme picture scenes like those you see all the time to music video clips

The best you can is to use 2 PASS CBR (with TMPGEnc you choose 2 pass vbr and you set min, average and max at the same value) with the most possible legal bitrate for those formats, about 2520kb/s.
A 2 Pass CBR CVD @ 2520kb/s may look better SVCD on macroblocks but also somehow less sharp and more smooth!

  5. I guess I'll mess around with the bitrate values and settings then pick the best one.

    Thanks

Not the best solution, as the bitrate has a max value and depends of size of media and size of movie.
