I am planning to purchase this particular Analog Modem for telephone dial-up. This product is a controller based modem as advertised by the manufacturer and is different than the usual Softmodems widely used in India. It is rather expensive too: US $64 whereas the others cost US $12(Softmodems). Is it worth purchasing this modem ? Will it improve my connection speed, download speed ? At present my Desktop connects at 42-44 KBPS. Will Performance Pro modem connect at higher speed ? I live in an area where telephone is the only medium for internet and broadband is not expected to arrive here in another one decade. Are there any forum members using this particular modem ? Pl advice me !

In the old days when computers were less powerful these winmodems maybe were a bad thing, but with a powerful computer 1ghz + then you will have no problem, as these modems will only use 5% maximum cpu power. However if you wish to get highest speed then a hardware modem is required but in practice you will not notice a big speed improvement (if any at all), but it can be used on any computer even old dos-based systems.. so when you do get broadband over 3G you can sell it on..
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.

I used a hardware modem a few years ago and didn't see much difference. Your speed is pretty good for a software modem. I have a noisy phone line at my office and the best it can do is 32K. That said, a hardware modem usually can improve the throughput when you have a noisy line. However, the newest software modems do a great job. The max speed of any modem is 53K, if you are up to 44K, you may not see much improvement. Maybe someone that is familiar with that particular modem might give you better info, but I wouldn't expect to see a big speed increase.

Not completely true, alot of the calls I get about unstable connections and crap are becauuse of crappy winmodems. They are better these days but not great. For example, my mom plays an online casino game (not for real money) constantly and has has non stop trouble with the speed of the thing. Her modem was already replaced once, and her ISP switched, she would just randomly get bumped out, not disconnected form the net just bumped from the game. Sometimes it would connect and just sit there.
About 1 month ago I installed a USR/3com hardware modem, now even living so far out of town she rocks with 53.6 connections and good speeds. Do not believe winmodem lies! They are the dark side. A real modem is worth every penny if your stuck on a modem.
