I use a Sony DRU500AX with the latest firmare (2.0g). I've successfully burned well over 200 DVDs over the last 9 months (all at 2x--LeadData's mostly). Since I'm near the end of my supply, purchased 25 Memorex -R/4x (media code PRODIS..CSO) from Staples.

Out of the first 7, I've had 3 coasters thus far--more than in the last 200 I've burned. Of the 4 successful, 2 were burned with Tmpgenc DVD Author and 2 were with Nero. However, the 2 with Nero (last version of 5.5) weren't completely successful since the first never finished the "lead out" writing portion (I had to manually stop it. The disc seems to play fine however.) and the second completed the burn but would not begin the verification process. For the 3 coasters, 2 were with Nero and the other was with TDA. For the 3 coasters, the problem (write error) occurred in the transition from "lead-in" to the actual file writing.

Does this sound like a media problem or a software problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Never tried the Memorex -R Prodisc's but for wory free burning I recomend you try the Memorex 4X+R made by RICOH . These have the media code RICOHJPNRO1 and are sold by TDK , Verbatim , and Memorex . I've had no disc related screw ups from these discs in over 200+ burns ( I've had a few bad author f*ck ups ) . Using these discs and any current version of nero I have not encountered a player these discs would not work on . The price is right too , usually on sale every week for around 1.20 US per disc .
Keep it on the big cam !

  3. media problem for sure. i know some people that has the same sympton as you. before i burn the media, i check if these disc are defective by looking at the writing side of the disc. they have a blue dye, but with further inspection, i notice purple dye, the size of a fingerprint, spotted on the writing layer. sucks, but now i can separate the defective disc and use them as frisbees or visit memorex.com and get a replacement.
