I've ripped some DVDs with SmartRipper.

Then I've used DVD2AVI and TMpegEnc to make the mpg-file, but it's getting to big - for a 1,5 hour movie I get a mpg-file close to 2 GB!

How can I get my megs (or avi's) smaller? Movies I download from WinMX are under 1 GB in size?

  3. lower your bitrate, from video and also from sound.
edit the mpegs and cut out anything that is not needed, like logos in front or titles after the movie. what resolution are you using?
try 352x288 instead of 480x576 for instance.

Why? That doesn't affect filesize, only bitrate and playing time affect filesize

  5. Changing the resolution will not make the filesizes smaller, only reducing the bitrate or the length of the video will reduce filesize.

  6. yes, but of you choose VCD, you'll get automatically 1150kbit instead of 2520 kbit with SVCD

You will also get Mpeg-1 instead of Mpeg-2, CBR instead of CQ and plenty of other differences, but you didn't mention those!

  8. yes, but he wanted smaller files, right?
smaller files means automatically less quality picture, unless you compensate that by using divx.

    Thanx, all!

I understand that I need to lower the movies bitrate (video/sound), and cut out any unessesary movie-clips.

I rip to vob, then using Nero to export to mpeg.

    Is AVS Video Converter better?

It is here, in Tmpgenc, that you set the bitrate to be used.
