Burning Help!

Hey,
Just got my dvd burner NEC 1300, and thought I would try to make some dvds, when I realized that this was more complicated than expected...

My goal is to burn some movies from my pc that can play on a regular dvd player that my parents own. I checked it out and it can handle dvd r, svcd and vcd format.

I have a bunch of movies downloaded from the net, most of them .avi or divx(I dunno what the difference is) files.

Now how do I go about making them into dvds?

What programs do I need for converting them, and to what format should I convert them, in order to get the best results.

Does the process take long ? Is it a program that converts the whole movie for u?

svcd, vcd, dvd r..... whats the difference here ?

I am real lost Hope some of you experts out there can help me with all my questions.
