Not sure if the discs have protcetion but the console does.
I back-up my game discs with Nero. Put the disc in the drive, choose copy disc, put in a blank and burn. However, for these backed-up games to work, my console had to have a mod chip fitted.
Thanks -
This is Video DVD to DVDR. Not PS2 DVD to DVDR. I'm moving this topic to the off topic section.
And you wont find any guides or tools specific for ps2 backuping on this site. -
"DVD to DVDR
Everything about DVD ripping, copying, decoding, encoding, reauthoring and burning from DVD-Video to DVD±R/W. But no DVD to VCD,SVCD,CVD, XVCD,DivX here please"
i dont see here anything about PS2 "But no DVD to VCD,SVCD,CVD, XVCD,DivX here please"
but now i know -
Everything about DVD ripping, copying, decoding, encoding, reauthoring and burning from DVD-Video to DVD±R/W.
DVD-Video isn't PS2 games. -
In answer... there are starting to be protections, but I don't know for sure if POP has them.
A good forum:
http://www.fileforums.com
But anyway, try Nero. DVD Decrypter is not the best suited program, and Alcohol is overkill. Try just using your basic burning proggy and hitting "copy disc".

how can i know if the game have protection?
i'v tried to backup 3 more games 2 was ok(fifa2004 and pos2003) and in ssx3 i'v got the same freezing problem. -
Prince of persia should work fine
A few questions
1. What brand of media are you using?
2. Was your original disk scratched or dirty?
3. What type of modchip are you using?
4. What version PS2 do you have?
Here is an alcohol tut

5. Laser could be dirty or going out
Ususally if you dont get any errors when burning you can also eleminate choice 2
If you dont have any other games that are exhibiting this problem on the same media then you can ususally rule out 5 also
Also if you are burning a DVD-rip there can always be problems of a bad release kalisto had a bad release of prince of persia
Protection problems give you the RSOD (Red Screen of Death)
To make a long story short there are games out there that have multiple execution files call .elf's if you have a newer version of the ps2 version 7 or higher and you have older modchips in them like a magic 3.1 or apple the first one then you will run into problems. Games like splinter cell and tomb raider. Version 6 and under typically doesnt run into problems with multiple elf games no matter what the chip is I think its a bios thing (same problem occurs with swap disks also)
However if you have ps2 with a newer chip like Messiah 2, Magiv V, or DMS3 you will not run into these problems no matter what the game is.
Also in this situation (if it was one game in particular) if I didnt have one of the more current chips I would
1. Find someone else that has the original also and try to back that one up on ritek or apple media burning at 1x on a fresh disk right out of the package, flip it over and look at the bottom and see what happens
(Also I would burn at 1X with no other programs running in the backuground and disable sleep mode during burning and stop all other unnecessary background programs while burning)
I have a version 7 ps2 with a Messiah 2 version 1.31 and have yet to find a game that doesnt work on my PS2 when I am using Apple and Ritek media.
Hope that helps and answers a lot of questions -
I have ps2 v 3004 R
i am using lg -r media. i think i have messiah 2 ... i'm not sure, how can i check? i know i have a messiah but i'm not sure what kind
from what i saw in several forums many ppl have problems with several games (like pop and ssx3)....so i think its connect to the chip and the ps2 version -

ok i'v just found out that i have the magik 3.1 chip
.....i was sure i have massiah .... so ....this is what causing the problem?[/url]

The first thing I am wondering is, can it only play dvd-r or can it play +r and r/w media. Also, what is the best program to use to copy DVD based PS2 games? One last question...Do I need a patch to backup SSX3 (an EA Sports game), or do I just need to back it up using the correct software? The first time I did it I used Pinnacle Instant Copy. Thanks for your help!

Recordnow Max, nero, or Alchol 120% seem to be the choice of people with pc to copy DVD games. Toast works great if you havea mac
With a neo 2.5 (if you have the correct gameshark you will not need any patches on CD or DVD games)
Flip gameshark over and look at inner ring to see the exact version -
Thanks a lot for your help. I am going to check it out tonight. I may have an older version of GameShark. I will have to check that out. Thank you!

I am looking online for GameSharks and they are mainly selling only GameShark 2 v.2.01 .. You mentioned that only 1.93 will work.. Will any GameShark higher than 1.93 work, or does it need to be exactly 1.93? Thanks!

I looked, and I have a Game Shark 2, version 1.99.. Is there a way I can get the dvd-r backups to boot with this? I know you had said before you can, but it has a weird boot method. Does anyone know how to do it?
Also, ps2daddy had mentioned something about GTA3. I do have this game. Is there a way I can boot a Dvd-r backup game with this game? I have no idea how to do it. Please help. Thank you!

Here are the 1.93 instructions
http://members.shaw.ca/bluemosquit0o/pg3.htm
If you have a 1.93 you need an original diks that has a higher toc than the DVD-r disk that you are trying to boot if you are in the UK the GTA3 is the largest DVD 5 and if you are in the US then Devil may cry has the largest TOC
1.99 and 2.01 have the same setup so this might work but I dont know give it a shot
try these boot methods from kage @ cdrom-guide
This works for me.
BOOTING METHODS
A) DVDR swap with GameShark 2 Version 2.01
1. Insert Gameshark2 Version2.01 CD into PS2 tray
2. Power off the PS2 for 5 seconds
3. Turn on PS2 by holding the RESET until the Green Reset light and the Blue eject button begins to flash together.
4. Release the RESET button (Note: that both lights will continue to flash)
5. After a few moments the tray will open and then swap the Gameshark disk with an original DVD game with a larger TOC. (eg. Devil may Cry)
6. After the tray closes select START GAME, WITHOUT CODES, then press the X button on the controller.
7. Press Eject within 5 to 10 seconds and be prepared to swap original disk with the backup copied DVD-R disk. Press Eject to Close.
8. DVDR Backup will now start.
If any of the above steps are not working for you, ensure you have the NEO2.5 DVDR soldered in precisely and correctly and there are no cold solder joints. I have personally tested this method using the NEO2.5 DVDR and GameShark2 V2.01 and have booted 8 different DVDR Backups.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although the above mentioned method has worked for me, for those who are still having problems, the below more complicated method has been proven to work:
Your PS2 must be configued to play DVDR Backups first:
1. Place GameShark2 Version 2.01 into the PS2 and press Reset
2. Select GameShark Codes and Press X
3. Select Add New Game, then Press X
4. Press X 3x. Each time, Updating Code List, Please Wait will then be displayed.
5. Hold the Reset button until it turns Red.
*** The above procedure needs only to be done once ***
Booting DVDR Backups:
1. Place the GameShark2 V2.01 disc into the PS2, then hold Reset Button untill it turns Red
2. Then Press the Reset Button and keep it held. The Reset Button will eventually turn green and the GameShark2 main menu will be displayed.
3. Highlight the GameShark2 Codes, do not press X
4. Press Eject and Swap the GameShark2 disk for the disk with the larger TOC.
5. Press Eject to close the tray and wait at least 10 seconds
6. Press X, highlight New Games and Press X
7. New Code should already be highlighted, with either an empty box to its left, or one with a 'tick' in it.
8. Press X to add or remove the 'tick' the press Start
9. The screen should now say With Code/Without Code. Hightlight With Code.
10. Now you can let go of the Reset Button, the begin pressin X continuously until the screen Updating Code List is displayed.
11. The disk tray will open and you will have a short time to replace the Original disk with the DVDR Backup. The tray will close automatically.
12. The screen will then go black for a while and the game will load. -
Thank you very much for your help. I'm going to give it a shot! I'll let you know what happens..
