I've got two AVI files to join together. They are XviD/AC3 and they overlap slightly, such that I need to cut a bit off one of them to get a seemless join.

I have done this already with VirtualDub using the Append AVI segment option but it produces a very loud full level high pitched noise just at the join point.

Is there a way to do as described without getting the noise at the join?

Couldn't you join the audio in Gold Wave, save it as a wave file, then add it to your appended AVI files?
    Hello.

Thanks but I got around the problem another way. I encoded the two AVIs I had separately with one of them cropped down to the point where they were to join seemlessly and then I joined the resulting MPEG-2 streams together with the TMPGEnc MPEG Tools.

The final result is not absolutely perfect because the sound does disappear just for a fraction of a second at the join point, but it's a hell of a lot better than it was by trying to join the AVIs together before encoding.

Fortunately the join is at a scene change and there is no dialog at that point, so the loss of sound is almost undetectable.
