I'm really running out of time to purchase a Dvd player for Christmas for my mom. I need your help. PC Club's response as to why LVD 2001 (the one I own) wasn't available was that it's been discountined, but according the the DVD Player section of this site, that's not true. However, I don't have time for PC Club to bring it back (if they do).
Anyhow, if I get my mom the LVD 2002, can I update it with the LVD 2001 firmware? My mom really doesn't need the camera card slot anyway.
Thanks for your help.

Per Liteon, the LVD-2001 is out of production. That's why PC-Club lists it as "discontinued".
I read a post somewhere else that the 2002 has V0.2.29 firmware. If your looking to upgrade the '02 firmware with an '01 image, I would not recommend it. Besides, I would expect that Liteon will have firmware updates for the '02 in the future.
There are still a few '01 players in some of the PC-Club stores. My buddy just bought one last week. If you *really* want one, you can find individual store stock through their web site, then maybe call that store and ask them to ship it to you (don't know if they will)?
The specs on the '02 are basically the same as the '01, minus the PC-Card slot, and maybe slightly better audio specs. I read a quote from a Liteon T.S. person who claimed the '01 and the '02 were the same basic hardware. I would like to see the inside of the '02. Anyone have pictures?

There is no new firmware out for the 2002 as yet - it already ships with the latest f/w loaded (0229 f/w). They will be updating the f/w on their site with a separate download for the 2002 when new f/w becomes available. The unit I just bought is dated on the box as being manufactured Sept 03. If you buy one that has that date or later, you will already have the latest firmware, so don't worry about that.

If anyone's still interested in 2001 and live around Seattle, WA area, I may be able to hook you up. I call every PC Club about 3 weeks ago and asked them to see if they can get 2001 for me. I didn't hear from them for some time, gave up, and bought 2002 during thanksgiving week. The week after, the Bellevue PC club store called me told me they have 2001 for me to pick up! Well, it's too late because I cut the UPC bar out of my 2002 box and sent it with for the rebate.
So if anyone's interested, I can help. -
i got my 2001 last week. Newegg and PCClub were out when I checked. I finally located them at www.erwincomp.com. The guys were really nice. Call them to see if they have any in stock. price was $149 shipped.
Also, the 2001 has more than just the pcmcia slot over the 2002. It upconverts to 720 and 1080 res. 2002 only does 480. -
$150 is too much, you you look at newegg, mvave, and some othre you can get it for ~$120 shipped.

ps2wiz,
Newegg and PCClub didn't have any when I was looking. They also responded that they weren't getting anymore since it's disconned. I looked at many places on the net for it. And newegg's price was 149, free ship. I got it for 139+10 ship. Same total. I think you may be thinking about the 2002 for 120. -
