This is how I dealt with it before using Xesdeeni's method ... deinterlacing the PAL source to make it PROGRESSIVE and then slowing it down to 23.976fps with 3:2 pulldown DOES work and will give you smooth motion etc. but you loose some image detail of course by deinterlacing.

I kinda hope that maybe the encoder wasn't set up correctly and think we should explore that first ... I say use the method FOO just suggested as a last ditch effert.

  2. Ok I'm using CCE 2.66.01.07 and my settings are :-

    Mpeg-2 (ES, One-pass VBR)

Quantization factor and Bitrate are set to Q60, Min 0, Max 9500

    Video Settings:-
    GOP sequence M=3 N/M=4
I've put a tick in "Add sequence end code" and "DVD Video compliant"

Luminance Level is 16 to 235
    frame rate set to 29.97

    Quality Settings:-
    Natural picture(selected)
    Alternate Scanning selected
Progressive frame flag is not selected.

Then I'd hit encode, can anyone see any mistakes in my settings?

While I'm waiting for a response I'll try the script in TMPGEnc

As I have said ... I am no CCE expert. However I have been told that when you encode INTERLACED material you should use:

    GOP sequence M=3 N/M=5

I was also told that changing the N/M to 4 (instead of 5) is only for encoding PROGRESSIVE material.

    So try M=3 and N/M=4

Otherwise your settings seem to be "in order".

    P.S.
Just noticed that your MAX is 9500kbps
That is WAY too high. You should limit your MAX bitrate (for the video) to 8000kbps.

  4. Ok, I ran into a real similar thing here recently...

Source file is a DivX encode, 25 fps. I seperated the ac3 sound in VirtualDub then frameserved the video to my MainConcept encoder. I set it as Progressive, the framerate to 23.97 and enabled the 3:2 pulldown. Then took the video & audio and muxed them together in DVD-Lab.

The result... picture is very near DVD quality, no qualms there. The audio is also in synch but.... there seems to be a little slow-motion phase every 5 seconds or so. Lasts maybe less than a second.

Any ideas why this is happening? Perhaps I should change the framerate in VirtualDub?

    Thanks!

You gotta ask yourself what does the MC encoder do when
the source and destination framerates are different. I don't know
but if it's decimating frames to get from 25 to 24 that might
be a problem. If you didn't resample the audio that IS the problem.

  6. Just curious, if his source is 29.976 fps and he AssumeFPS (23.976) he is still seeing the effects of interlacing.

If he were to ChangeFPS (23.976), and assuming he got the field correct, would the Interlace lines still be visible?

  7. Oh! his source is 25fps, forget what i said.
