I am trying to capture video to make a DVD and I am having some problems. The video is "Bill Cosby: Himself" an older manufactured VHS tape that I simply want to convert to DVD for my own personal use. The problem is that ATI MMC, which I use for all my video capturing, detects some sort of copy protection in the video signal and will not allow me to capture video from this source. Is there any way that I can get around this?

I am using an ATI AIW 7500 card with the latest version of ATI MMC.

    Please help!

Where is Onalaska? I've never heard of it ...

Anyway, goto my site and download the ATI hacks (found on ATI capture guide pages). It'll remove that awful nag message and let you do what you want to do.

  3. You will still have the 7 second light/dark scenes with the hacks. This is not to say Smurf is misleading you. The new drivers have been changed in many ways to circumvent the removal of macrovision embedded in the tape. I see this situation being posted on a continual basis. Hope it works for you.

Not to mention that Macrovision is now implemented in hardware now. It's an integral part of the Theater 200 chip. So, unfortunately, the only alternative is to use an external box, but by doing that you're going to lose another layer of quality.

Do a google search for DisableATIMacrovision. I found a package that disabled that on my 8500DV, and it worked pretty good.

  5. The macrovision is implemented in the drivers on a software basis. I had reverse engineered the code with IDA and was watching the system API. If you reinstall the drivers or update, the macro is re-enabled.

It depends on the Macrovision level ... and whether or not CopyGuard is on it and not Macro.

    Hi all again,

    Sorry for joining in so lately, but I think it's better to stick here than starting a new topic;

Does the Macrovision protection works at the MMC level, at the Catalyst level or at the hardware level ?

I mean, as I don't like MMC and I use other sw, would ATI's Macrovision protection still work with Video Studio 7, WinDVR3, and other third party software ?

    Thanks,

    Zetti

Zetti, To answer your first question, I used ATI-MV-Hack.zip. It worked perfectly. I am using An ATI AIW 7500 with the latest MMC. As for your second question regarding the level at which Macrovision works, I am not too sure. Perhaps someone else knows?...

  13. mbaker_jr,
Did that also remove the light to dark AGC cycling? I have an AIW 7500 and haven't been able to find anything that gets rid of that.

I actually had some problems related to tracking on my VCR with the tape that I was trying to convert and I was not able to record any video. The problem that I originally had was that MMC would not even give me the option to record from the protected tape. The hack that I applied fixed that problem but I am not sure about the light to dark cycling. I will try it out with a couple of other tapes tonight and report back.

I've never seen the light/dark cycle on my ATI AIW 7200 cards ... but I have seen it on a 9000 and 128PRO ... I don't know what that means, just thought I'd share.
