may i ask whats the point of your post? $300 is not a good deal. I got my dual format burner for $95 and no rebate hassle.

Also, the Gateway AR-230 is on sale for $299 until Christmas. People say it's just a rebadged LiteOn LVW-5001, but I haven't seen official confirmation of this assertion.

Not decent for me. No Firewire means no deal. I've got 60 hours of 8mm/D8 tapes to transfer, so E60 would be the minumum Panny for me.

Besides, the reports say that E50 uses a non-standard format that won't copy on a PeeCee. True? False?

    Nope.

Also, it has s-video & I put my High8 on dvd-r through s-video & the results are perfect, mostly cause it has special filters.

curtw was talking about oranges, but you post was about apples. LOL

    No FireWire - NO deal.

Also, if you have Panasonic DVD-RAM/-R, and want to edit your videos on PC, you have to buy DVD-RAM for PC. And also DVD-RAM Video format is compatible with NOTHING!

    Thanks kabanero!

So, if I were to record to -R(W) on a Panasonic, would I be able to drop the resulting disc into my computer's -ROM drive, burn straight to a new -R(W), and have a resulting disc that will actually play without having to "massage" the files/folders in any way? I'm not looking at editing, I just want to make multiple copies.

    curtw,

I guess you can do it with Panasonic but only with DVD-Rs (and I am not even sure about that) because Panasonic uses DVD-RAM as rewritable format, not -RW.

Well, what I can tell you:

I have LiteOn LVW-5001 +R/RW stand alone recorder and LiteOn 401S DVD recorder in my PC. When I record the video on 5001 using DVD+RW disk, I don't even have to finalize it (like with DVD-RWs). I take it out of 5001 and can play it on any other stand alone player. Or I put it in my 401S in my PC, rip it to HD, and make multiple copies on +R or +RW disks. Also, I wouldn't suggest you to copy straight from DVD-ROM to DVD-+R/RW to avoid coasters, always do from HD.

Thanks! Yeah, I know that coasters are a risk, but sometimes I just feel like living on the edge, and possibly throwing away a buck.

It looks like the LiteOn 5001 may be the one for me. I can't read +RW's in my -ROM, but I *can* read them with my Pioneer A05 -RW burner, so the HD step would become a requirement if I wanted to dub discs from the LiteOn versus the Panny.
