Having already converted my VHS tape to DIVX I would like to add a filter without having to recode the divx. Is it possible just to apply a filter IE (VHS) and not reencode the divx movie. I have not been able to find any help searching through the tutorials without having to reecode.
Thanks for any advice

No. Well, of course you can apply a filter without reencoding, but then nothing will happen.

Thanks for stating the obviouse.
Having Divx the movie once I do not want to degrade it by divxing it again, I just want to add the vhs filter and remove the background noise. With this filter in on encode it runs at about 4 frames a second so i did not use it. On veiwing the final movie I think it can be improved by this filter. Is it possible just to apply the filter to the finnished DIVX or have I got to introdce the Divx codec and match the bitrate with the original.

introdce the Divx codec and match the bitrate
The source file is read, and each and every frame decoded to a still image. On this image (if it's not a temporal filter) the selected filter(s) is applied (simplified). The image is then encoded according to your settings.
The higher the bit rate in the source AVI, the more like the original video the decoded image will be (but never 100%). The higher bit rate used in the encoding, the more like the decoded image the encoded image will be (but never 100%).

Thankyou for replying again.
I do realise that filters are applied during the encoding procces. They are blanked out on direct stream copy. However if you already have the file that you want you do not want to change it apart from applying a filter, Keeping the original file specification ( with the fiter added) without having to reset the encoder, is this possible. If I cut and trim I do not need to introduce a compression codec . I want the file to finnish as it started just the cleanup action of the VHS filter.

Again: No. You have to reencode. And when you do this, it doesn't matter what codec and or settings you use. Any codec (besides huffyuv and raw AVI) will cause a degradation in quality. I suggest you start from scratch with your original, and encode again, this time with your filter applied.
