The day I first tested my ADVC i was very disappointed. I was using a straight RCA (L R audio and VIdeo ) plugs and experienced the same color bleed you mentioned. I said "This is crap". So then I noticed the small supplied adapter plug and said "Okay, i'll try it" well, I hooked it to the RCA Video lead then went to plug it in to the ADVC.

Now you know, the AUDIO plugs are in the front for INPUT. SO seeing the S-VIDEO connection in the front I tried to connect. It would not plug in. I looked at the pins, looked at the plug and said "This can't be" I said "Dang, they sent the wrong plug"

Took me a half hour of stumbling before I finally caught on (In the manul ) that the S-VIDEO IN is in the back (poor design.....)
Man, that is a poor design.
    I confess I didn't look at the manual =
But I ran an s-video cable from my scart connector...

...to the Canopus and yep, you guessed, it wouldn't fit in the front.
I just assumed the front of the unit was for input and the back for output.
    Seems logical to me anyway
By the way, when I ran the s-video from the scart adapter in my TV to a scart adpater with composites out, it didn't quite work - I got everything, picture and sound, but it was B&W

    One other, un-connected thing...
...I'm still not getting this macrovision and ADVC-100 issue.
I've searched and learnt you hold down the input select for fifteen seconds, right?
Trouble is, when do I do that?
Do I do that before I run the signal through it, ie. before I start my 'capture' program?
When I hold it down with my capture program running its freezes (the software).
    I suppose I should...

    1) Turn on the ADVC-100
    2) Hold down the input select for fifteen seconds
    3) Ensure the input select is correct, ie. its set to 'analogue'.
    4) Start up Pinnacle Studio
    5) 'Capture'

    About right folks?
    Thanks,
    Will

As far as I'm aware, the macrovision trick does not work for PAL users.

Although I have one of these scart macro-thingies, what do you do for copy-protected video's you're backing up?

I'm gonna play around with my leads tonight (standard composites and this s-video lead that came in the box) and hopefully, by the time top gear starts on Sunday, I'll have the best configuration for comparison.
    So, un-edited avi, right?

Don't seem to need anything - I've backed up the whole of Due South season 1 to DVD without any macro problems, but that's probably because it isn't protected.

After that , it works excellent. I have copied tapes and home movies IN to the Computer using Vegas Video. I have also used the PRINT TO DV funtion of vegas which lets me copy from the timeline out to a VHS tape.

Best of luck to you !

    I'm at home now....
...thanks, but this was no different

Anytime after you turn the power on, then it's good until you shut the power off. You have to do it each time you turn it on. Not sure about that 15 seconds though, seems longer to me, maybe 15 seconds after the lights on the front change. I think I saw somewhere that it's 15 seconds after you see the color bars but you only see those if you have the analog outputs connected to a monitor so that doesn't really help much.

I haven't seen DJRUMPY in a while either. As well as two more people I used to talk with a lot (actually forget their screen names). Of course, not sure I'd want to throw darts at any of them, they've all been a help to me in one way or another. Even Tex, though I still want my blanks back!

I suspect this is a PAL-only feature - I tried doing this last night (i.e. hooking up my RCA composite video plug to the Canopus supplied adapter, and connecting the S-VHS-like plug on the adapter into the back of the ADVC-100), but no video registered on my capture program (Ulead Movie Factory 2). When I reverted to my old configuration - RCA composite to ADVC-100 - my capture program registered incoming video again.
