  1. My parents want to get a DVD-VHS combination player. I do DVD writeables, VCD, SVCD, miniDVD etc and would like to be able to share as much stuff with them as possible. I know there are very few DVD players that support all that. I have one of the few (a Sampo). But I wondered if people could recommend a DVD-VHS combo where the DVD part accepted the most amount of formats, with DVD writeable being a must (and hopefully plays both plus and minus format.) My Aunt has a Panasonic combo and it reads plus and minus DVD writeables, and VCD, but nothing else (although it does read mpeg photos). Anyone know anything out there that does more?

  2. Hi, I have the Zenith XBV343 combo, it plays all DVD formats, JPEGs, WMA, and MP3's. Also no problems with cheap DVD media like Princo. It has a smaller recess in the tray for miniDVD but I never tried one. It plays VCD if you do the remote hack listed on this site. I did the Hack the day I got it and it has played VCD's ever since. Not sure about SVCD, I never tried. You could pick one up for probably <$140.

Don't get the Sony SLV D300P, I had it and it wouldn't consitantly play all DVD formats.

Check the DVD players section on the left of this site.

  3. I have a Philips 750VR. Initially I blasted it (see my post about it on this website), but I found out that I was doing something wrong. I can now play VCD, CVD, SVCD just fine, but the audio for those 3 must be 44100 sampling rate. 48000 will not work. I have not tried a home made DVD yet.

Besides the screwed up remote, the unit plays fine.
