Is there some method or program that can tell me what codecs are installed on my computer and when they were installed?

Depending on your operating system, but you can try by going into:
Control Panel
Multimedia, or Sound and multimedia
go to the last tab (I don't remember what it is called under w98, or ME)
Look up the Video Codecs listed there.
If you are using W2K (which I doubt)last tab is called Hardware, click on it, and then go to the bottom of the list there is Video codecs.

most codec info can be viewed with
control panel, sounds and multimedia, devices and then you can see the codecs listed uder audio and videocompression codecs.
However not all are listed here, some dvd, wdm driver/codecs (cinemaster etc)are not here but come under the dll files in system.
