  1. I have downloaded a film and the only program it will play is VideoLAN. I want to put it on DVD but when I try to split the audio in VirtualDUB it says there is no decompressor avaliable and Goldwave will not even look at the file. Any ideas on how I can create an audio file?

You need to find out what codec you need. Use GSpot to tell you what you need and what you have.

We get codecs from the Tools section at left. Also, here is a guide for converting AC3 to Wave.

If you convert AVI files that contain AC3 audio, you will find the VirtualDUB mod version pretty useful. It can read MPEG-2 and AC3 encoded files. Normally used for opening VOB or MPG files, it is also suitable for DivX/Xvid with AC3 audio files.

The best way to convert to DVD is to extract the audio in uncompressed WAV format and the video separatelly (don't use direct stream copy, the codecs used sometimes by other people don't work well with MPEG encoders) using a different video codec. If you are not tight in disk space, use Hufyuv. It will not degrade video quality in the intermediate step.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
