  2. I have the exact same problem!! All I had to do was click on the file and explorer would crash. As a temp fix I created a new user on xp, logged in as the new user and I no longer have any problems. Would still like to know why it does this though!!

Just a question, can you play the mpeg2 file with another program? I could but it wouldn't play properly, something about direct draw not being enabled!?

I'm bumping this one up from quite a long time ago because I am having the same problem.

I don't know what the deal is. I couldn't get PowerDVD to work, it would crash when I tried to play DVDs. So I used WMP for a long time. I thought that the program Showshifter might have been causing the problems. I recently tried to install DirectDVD, during the installation, it was unable to get past the point where it says it was installed the dvd decoder and AC3 software. I uninstalled Showshifter and ran the DirectDVD installer again, and it worked this time. It worked for several different discs, however, when I tried it later in the night, it would stop responding when I tried to play the DVD.

PowerDVD still does not work, it just crashes. WMP does the same as DirectDVD, it just stops responding. This is becoming very frusturating because my PC is my only way to watch DVDs. If anyone has any ideas, please help. Thanks.

  5. Goto "Add-Remove Programs / Windows Components", and uninstall WMP. Reboot, and reinstall WMP.

    Any difference?

Well before your reply, WMP started working again (responding), however, now it gives me an error that says there is a problem with digital copyright protection. Clicking "more info" explains that it is a problem with the dvd decoder. Any ideas?
