This depends on what outputs you have on the camera. This determines what inputs you need on the card. Your camera should have some form of analog output but it may be composite or S-Video, and you need to find out which in order to determine if any particular card is suitable for your needs as the budget capture cards tend to support one or the other but rarely both.

Do yourself a favour and spend the money on the Canopus ADVC-100 capture device.

Assuming you will be working with a lot of home made videos this is really the best solution since it will convert your analog cam footage to DV AVI which is very easy to edit and manipulate with a variety of programs.

TV tuner cards are best at capturing footage that does not need any kind of extensive editing.

The CANOPUS ADVC-100 normally goes for $300 but sometimes you can find it for as low as $250 if you go to eBay or use a price search website such as PRICEBRABBER.COM

It connects to the computer using FIREWIRE or aka IEEE 1394 (SONY calls it i.link).

On the LEFT HAND side of the screen click on CAPTURE CARDS and you will find that the CANOPUS ADVC-100 is the top USER RATED capture card (well actually it is an external device).

    P.S.
The CANOPUS ADVD-100 will work with a WINDOWS PC as well as an APPLE MAC

  12. Try this TV tuner card from Leadtek. It has composite video input for your camera. With your XP 2800 you should be able to caputre MPEG-2 at high enough bitrates to make decent quality DVDs and SVCDs. You can also capture AVI and MPEG-1 with the card. I bought one for my father and even his 1.1ghz celeron captures good with it. To get the best captures you should avoid multitasking while capturing at high quality, use a program like enditall2 to close background programs before capturing, and disable some of those pesky windows "services" that are rarely needed.

You can capture using huffyuv or an mjpeg codec with a $30 TV card like a WinTV GO and edit it all you want- just the same as DV, without any problems. For this guy's purposes and budget, it would probably work just fine.
